AI phone number to call in 2026: 5 verified lines and voice agents

1-800-ChatGPT is the one AI phone number to call we could verify. Plus what happened to Copilot and Perplexity lines, and how to get your own AI number.

Collage of the official websites of 1-800-ChatGPT, Vapi, Bland AI and Retell AI

If you want an AI phone number to call from an ordinary phone, the one consumer line we could confirm on an official page as of late October 2026 is 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478). Per OpenAI's help center, you can call it from a US or Canadian number with no account and get 30 free minutes a month. If you'd rather have an AI answer your number, voice agent platforms such as Vapi, Retell AI and Bland AI will give you a phone number and charge by the minute. Honestly, I'd treat that single verified line as the whole consumer story for now.

The list is short on purpose. Copilot and Perplexity used to have WhatsApp lines, but Meta's WhatsApp policy change pushed them off the platform in January 2026, and we couldn't confirm a working number for either on an official page. We left them out of the picks rather than print a number that might be dead or, worse, belong to someone else.

Key takeaways

  • 1-800-ChatGPT is still live for voice calls, for US and Canadian numbers only, with 30 free minutes a month and no account needed, per OpenAI's help center.
  • The same contact works on WhatsApp again, but only in Europe: OpenAI switched it back on in the European Economic Area after an EU order, starting July 13, 2026.
  • The Copilot and Perplexity WhatsApp lines ended on January 15, 2026, so I'd be suspicious of any number you find for them on third-party sites.
  • If you want your own AI phone number, Vapi includes one free US number and Bland AI includes an inbound number on its free Start plan. Calls are billed per minute.

Ranking method

Nobody at The AI Future ran hands-on tests or placed test calls for this piece. We compared services using official help pages, pricing pages and documentation, plus published news coverage, as of late October 2026. The rule for inclusion was strict: a phone number or service only made the list if we could confirm it on the provider's own site. The ranking criteria were:

  • Verified access: is the number or service confirmed on an official page right now?
  • Ease of use: can you just dial, or do you need an account, an app or code?
  • Cost: free minutes, per-minute rates and hidden pass-through fees.
  • Coverage: which countries and which channels (voice, WhatsApp, SMS).
  • Control: can you pick the voice, the model and what the AI says?
  • Privacy: what the provider says it stores and for how long.

Prices are in US dollars and change often. Check the vendor's page before you commit.

The best AI phone numbers to call in 2026, ranked

1-800-ChatGPT – best for calling an AI from any phone

ChatGPT's phone line lets you dial 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) and talk to the assistant by voice, with no app, no internet connection and no account.

1-800-ChatGPT homepage
Image: 1-800-ChatGPT, chatgpt.com (official website)

Strengths

It's the only general-purpose AI assistant with a phone number we could confirm on an official page. OpenAI calls it an "experimental feature" and says you can call from a U.S. or Canadian number, with standard carrier fees possibly applying. That probably makes it useful on a landline, an old flip phone, or for a relative who will never install an app.

The WhatsApp side has had a rougher year. OpenAI announced that ChatGPT would leave WhatsApp after January 15, 2026 because of a WhatsApp policy change. After the European Commission ordered Meta to restore free access for rival assistants on June 9, 2026, OpenAI brought the verified 1-800-CHATGPT contact back in the EEA. The Decoder reports that text, image uploads, voice messages and image generation all work there. Outside the EEA, WhatsApp access isn't available.

Key features

  • You can make voice calls by dialing 1-800-242-8478 from the US or Canada.
  • WhatsApp works in the EEA only: message +1-800-242-8478, with rollout gradual by country code.
  • No account is needed, because conversations are tied to your phone number.
  • OpenAI warns you as you approach the monthly limit.
  • There's also an AI phone line for product support, 1-888-GPT-0090, listed in OpenAI's help center and separate from the 1-800 assistant.

Pros

  • Works on any phone, including landlines.
  • Free for 30 minutes a month in the US and Canada.
  • Official number published by OpenAI.

Cons

  • Voice calls limited to US and Canadian numbers.
  • No screen, so no links, images or long lists.
  • Calls and transcripts may be stored and reviewed for safety, per OpenAI.

1-800-ChatGPT pricing: Free, 30 minutes per month (checked October 2026). After that, OpenAI points you to the app or chatgpt.com. See details

Vapi – best for your own AI number, built by developers

Vapi is a developer platform for building voice agents that answer and make phone calls, and it includes a free US phone number to attach your agent to.

Vapi official preview image
Image: Vapi, vapi.ai (official website)

Strengths

If what you really want is an AI that people can call, Vapi seems to be the cheapest way to get a working number. Its docs say you get one free Vapi phone number without a saved payment method. The catch is in the same doc: free numbers use US area codes, accept inbound calls only and can't be ported out.

Pricing is modular. Vapi charges $0.05 a minute for hosting and passes through the cost of the transcriber, model and voice at cost. Bland AI's pricing FAQ estimates that most Vapi production stacks land at roughly $0.13 to $0.30 a minute all-in. That's a competitor's estimate, so it's only a rough range.

Key features

  • You get one free US inbound number on the usage plan, and five on Core.
  • There's a full catalog of speech, LLM and voice providers.
  • Starter credits give you $5 free to begin.
  • Call simulation lets you test before going live.

Pros

  • Free number lowers the cost of a first test.
  • Provider costs passed through with no markup, per Vapi.
  • Scales from hobby project to production.

Cons

  • Built for developers; expect some setup.
  • Free number is inbound only and US only.
  • Total per-minute cost depends on the stack you choose.

Vapi pricing: Free to start with $5 credits, then $0.05/min hosting plus providers; Core package $29/month (checked October 2026). See pricing

Bland AI – best for one all-in per-minute rate

Bland AI is an enterprise voice AI platform for inbound and outbound phone agents, priced with a single per-minute rate that covers the model and voice.

Bland AI official preview image
Image: Bland AI, bland.ai (official website)

Strengths

Bland's selling point is predictable billing. Going by the pricing page, the per-minute rate covers the LLM, speech-to-text and text-to-speech "with no token charges", with telephony billed separately on your own carrier or Bland's at pass-through cost. The Start plan comes with two credits and an inbound number valued at $15 a month, with no card required.

Key features

  • The free Start plan includes an inbound number.
  • It handles phone, SMS and web.
  • You can bring your own carrier, with Twilio or SIP trunks supported.
  • Compliance covers SOC 2, HIPAA with a BAA, and GDPR, per Bland.

Pros

  • One rate makes cost planning simple.
  • Free inbound number to start.
  • Strong compliance list for regulated industries.

Cons

  • Start plan caps you at 100 calls a day.
  • Telephony is an extra line on the bill.
  • Positioned for enterprise; overkill for a personal project.

Bland AI pricing: Free Start plan with credits, then talk time $0.14/min (Start) or $0.12/min (Build); Enterprise custom (checked October 2026). See pricing

Retell AI – best for hearing a live demo before you build

Retell AI is a platform for building AI voice agents that automate phone calls, with pay-as-you-go pricing and a live demo on its site.

Retell AI official preview image
Image: Retell AI, retellai.com (official website)

Strengths

Retell's own advice is that "the fastest way to judge it is to hear one", and it offers a live demo on its homepage. Its agents handle mid-sentence interruptions and can transfer to a human during the call, per the company. New accounts get $10 in free credits and 20 free concurrent calls.

Key features

  • Per-minute pricing runs $0.07 to $0.31 depending on model and voice.
  • Costs are itemized, with voice infrastructure listed at $0.055/min and LLM and voice extra.
  • A warm transfer to a human can happen mid-call.
  • Chat agents cost from $0.002 per message.

Pros

  • $10 credits cover building and test calls.
  • No annual contract.
  • Transparent component pricing table.

Cons

  • Cost varies a lot by model choice.
  • Needs setup time before you have a number people can call.

Retell AI pricing: $10 free credits, then pay as you go from $0.07/min; Enterprise custom (checked October 2026). See pricing

Numbers that no longer work

Search results still show old WhatsApp numbers for Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Here's what happened. Meta changed its WhatsApp Business API rules in October 2025 to bar general-purpose AI chatbots. Technobezz reports Microsoft confirmed Copilot would disappear from WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, and that chat history wouldn't transfer because access was unauthenticated. Notebookcheck reports that ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity were all removed on that date.

The EU order of June 2026 lets these assistants return in the EEA, and ChatGPT has. We couldn't confirm on Microsoft's or Perplexity's own pages that their lines are back, so we don't list numbers for them. If you see one on a blog, check it against the company's official site before you message it. A recycled or fake number is likely an easy way to hand your phone number and questions to a stranger. For Copilot's current options, see our Microsoft AI review; for Perplexity, our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.

Choosing the right AI phone number to call

Decide which direction the call goes

If you want to ring an AI and ask it things, you want a consumer line like 1-800-ChatGPT. If you want callers to reach an AI on your number, you want a voice agent platform or an AI receptionist. These are different products with different pricing. Our guide to AI phone answering systems goes deeper on the second group.

Check where you are calling from

1-800-ChatGPT voice is limited to US and Canadian numbers. Its WhatsApp contact works only in the EEA. Vapi's free numbers are US-only. If you're elsewhere, plan on the app or an imported local number.

Verify the number before you dial

I'd only trust numbers published on the company's own domain. If you get an unknown number calling you and claiming to be an AI service, run it through an AI phone number lookup tool first.

Estimate minutes, not plans

Voice agents bill by the minute, so your bill tracks call length times volume. The worked example below shows how fast that adds up.

Free vs paid: what you actually get

Free gets you a taste. On the consumer side, 1-800-ChatGPT gives you 30 minutes a month. On the business side, free means starter credits ($5 at Vapi, $10 at Retell), a free number (Vapi, Bland) or a small call allowance (25 AI calls a month at Smith.ai). Paid gets you volume, more concurrent calls, longer data retention and support.

Here's a worked example. Say a small clinic gets 300 calls a month and each lasts 3 minutes. That is 900 minutes.

PlatformRate usedEstimated monthly cost
Bland AI (Start)$0.14/min talk time$126 plus telephony
Retell AI$0.07–$0.31/min$63–$279
Vapi~$0.13–$0.30/min (Bland's estimate)~$117–$270
Smith.ai (live agents)$300 for 30 calls + $11.50/extra call$3,405

The gap between AI-only and human answering is probably the main story: roughly 10 to 30 times. The gap between AI platforms depends mostly on which language model and voice you pick, not on the platform itself.

The limits

  • Noise: OpenAI says background noise may cause unintended responses and suggests headphones or voice isolation.
  • Silence from safety filters: OpenAI notes 1-800-ChatGPT may refuse or not respond when a prompt trips its safety measures.
  • Policy risk: a platform owner can switch off a channel, as Meta did with WhatsApp in January 2026.
  • No visuals: a voice call can't show you a map, a table or a link.
  • Privacy: calls are tied to your phone number. Don't share account numbers, passwords or medical details on any AI line.

Final verdict

For a personal AI phone number to call, 1-800-ChatGPT is the one verified option, and it's free for 30 minutes a month in the US and Canada. In Europe, message the same contact on WhatsApp. For a business that wants an AI to answer its own number, I'd start with Vapi if you have a developer, Bland AI if you want one predictable rate, and Smith.ai if you need humans in the loop.

FAQ

Is there an AI phone number I can call for free?

Yes. 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478) is free for 30 minutes a month when you call from a US or Canadian number, according to OpenAI's help center. You don't need an account. Standard carrier fees may apply, and after the limit OpenAI points you to the ChatGPT app or website.

Is 1-800-ChatGPT still working in 2026?

Yes, as of late October 2026 OpenAI's help center still describes phone calls to 1-800-CHATGPT from the US and Canada. The WhatsApp version was switched off globally on January 15, 2026, and returned only in the European Economic Area from July 13, 2026.

What is the Copilot phone number?

Microsoft's Copilot WhatsApp line was shut down after January 15, 2026, following WhatsApp's policy change. We could not confirm a current Copilot phone or WhatsApp number on an official Microsoft page, so we don't list one. Use the Copilot app or website instead.

Does Perplexity have a phone number?

Perplexity's WhatsApp bot was removed in January 2026 along with ChatGPT and Copilot, according to Notebookcheck. We couldn't verify a current Perplexity number on its official site, so we don't publish one. Check perplexity.ai directly before messaging any number claiming to be Perplexity.

How do I get an AI phone number for my business?

Sign up for a voice agent platform. Vapi includes one free US inbound number, and Bland AI includes an inbound number on its free Start plan. You then pay per minute of call time, roughly $0.07 to $0.31 a minute depending on platform, model and voice.
