Notion AI Review (2026): Agents, Credits and Whether Business Is Worth It

Notion AI now runs rebuilt agents and a new credit system, but full access needs the $20 Business plan. Here is who should pay and who should skip it.

Notion AI is the most useful AI you can add if your team already runs on Notion, and the October agent rebuild makes Business a strong bundle. Solo users on Free or Plus, and teams whose knowledge lives elsewhere, will get more from a standalone assistant.

Pricing Free and Plus ($10/member/mo annual, $12 monthly): limited AI trial only; Business $20/member/mo annual ($24 monthly) with full AI and 1,500 Standard + 500 Select credits; Enterprise custom; extra credits $10 per 1,000

Short answer: Notion AI is the AI layer built into the Notion workspace, and in late 2026 it is less a writing helper than a team of agents that work across your pages, databases and connected apps. It is not really free: the Free and Plus plans get only a limited trial, and full Notion AI starts with the Business plan at $20 per member per month billed annually. If your team already runs on Notion, it is the most useful AI you can add. If it doesn't, you are paying for a workspace to get an assistant.

This Notion AI review looks at the product as it stands on 24 October 2026, drawing on Notion's official release notes and help center, independent hands-on write-ups and recent user reviews. Timing matters. Notion rebuilt its agents and moved everyone to a new credit system on 19 October 2026, and existing workspaces switch over on 2 November. That changes the value math, so we cover it in detail below.

What is Notion AI?

Notion AI is the set of AI features inside Notion, the docs, wiki and database app. The center of it is Notion Agent, a personal assistant that can read your workspace, write and edit pages, build databases and run multi-step tasks. Around it sit Custom Agents (background bots that run on schedules or triggers), AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search across connected tools, Research mode, AI Autofill for databases and the usual writing tools, as summarized in eesel's May 2026 review.

The big difference from ChatGPT or Claude is context. Notion AI works on what is already in your workspace, so it can summarize a project database or draft a status update from last week's meeting notes without copying and pasting. The trade-off is that it is only as good as your workspace. Asian Efficiency put it bluntly in July: "Messy workspaces get messy AI answers."

Notion AI features in 2026

Notion Agent, rebuilt in October

The 19 October release rebuilt the agent harness. According to Notion's release notes, agents now get their own computer and browser, better context management and a "Review for me" mode with safety checks. They can work on a task for up to 24 hours; AI Agent Store notes that is up from five minutes. Notion also says mobile chats load up to 50% faster.

Auto, the model router

You can still pick a model yourself. Notion 3.8 added seven, including GPT 6.1-Sol, GPT-6 Luna, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, per the 3.8 release notes. But the new default is Auto, which matches each task to a model by quality, speed and cost. Notion claims that across 20+ common tasks, Auto gave results similar to Opus 5.5 and Astra at about 90% lower average cost, so credits go about 10 times further. That is Notion's own test, not an independent one. Treat it as a claim to verify on your own work.

Custom Agents and sub-agents

Custom Agents arrived in Notion 3.3 in February. They run in the background, triggered by a schedule, a Slack message, a new database entry or a finished meeting summary. Notion 3.7 in September added sub-agents, so one agent can hand work to others with their own instructions, access and model. Notion cites Remote, which runs its IT help desk on five agents and reports saving $500,000 a year. That is a vendor case study, so read it as a best case.

Skills

Skills are reusable AI commands. Since 3.7 you can build one by chatting with Notion Agent, share a library across the workspace and run it with a slash command. You can also export skills as SKILL.md files to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini or Grok. 3.8 added a Skills API that syncs skills to tools like ChatGPT and Claude.

AI Meeting Notes

Type /meet on a page and Notion transcribes and summarizes the conversation. No bot joins the call. Fireflies, a competitor, explains that the desktop app captures system audio from Zoom, Meet, Teams and Slack huddles, while the browser version is mic-only. It supports 16 languages, with speaker labels only in English. Since 3.7, a Custom Agent can kick in as soon as the summary is ready to file action items or write a status update.

Connections and MCP

Notion 3.8 lets Notion Agent and Custom Agents pull context from, and act in, 150+ outside tools via MCP. Notion's examples include building an account brief from HubSpot data and adding Stripe billing details to a customer review. It also works the other way: any MCP-compatible agent can read and update your Notion workspace, and admins can see and revoke each connection.

Bring your own AI

Business and Enterprise members can connect a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan to cover their Notion AI usage with no markup, per the 3.8 notes. The 19 October release extended that to ChatGPT Go for your personal Notion Agent. Bring-your-own-key is in private alpha for Enterprise.

Notion AI pricing

Prices were checked in October 2026. Notion's official pricing page was not reachable from our tools, so the plan prices below come from Breeze (September 2026) and Krater, which verified them on 3 October. Both are competitors, but they agree, and the credit allowances come straight from Notion's help center.

PlanPrice per memberNotion AI access
Free$0Limited AI trial, no credits
Plus$10/month annually, $12 monthlyLimited AI trial, no credits
Business$20/month annually, $24 monthlyFull Notion AI: Agent, Custom Agents, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search; 1,500 Standard + 500 Select credits a month
EnterpriseCustomFull AI plus zero data retention with LLM providers, SCIM, audit logs and admin controls
Extra Notion credits$10 per 1,000 (monthly) or $13 per 1,000 (annual pool)Business and Enterprise only

The old $10 per-member AI add-on is gone. Krater reports that existing add-on subscribers were moved to Business at their old price. Getting full AI now means paying Business rates for every member, which is the steep jump Asian Efficiency flagged from Plus to Business.

How the new credits work

Under the new system, each Business or Enterprise member gets 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month. Standard credits cover anything on Auto, plus AI editing, translation, AI blocks and formulas. Select credits cover models you pick yourself and Custom Agents you own. They don't roll over, can't be pooled and can't be swapped for each other. When one runs out, those features pause until the next reset unless an admin lets members dip into the workspace's paid Notion credits.

Two dates to put in your calendar. Existing workspaces move to this system on 2 November 2026. And from 1 December 2026, AI Meeting Notes starts drawing on Standard credits, at about 10 credits per hour of meeting. That works out to roughly 150 meeting hours a month if you used Standard credits for nothing else. Workers, Notion's developer automation feature, uses no credits during its beta. For agents, Notion estimates about 5 credits for a simple task, 10 for a medium one and 25 for a complex one, so 500 Select credits covers roughly 20 to 100 agent runs a month.

What the free plan really includes

Not much AI. Free and Plus users get a trial of chat, writing and autofill in limited quantities. Fireflies reports the meeting-notes trial is capped at 20 AI responses per workspace. Krater adds that anyone, even on Free, can buy credits for Custom Agents, but Breeze says credits are for Business and Enterprise only. That conflict is unresolved, so check in your workspace settings before you plan around it.

Performance and independent testing

Nobody at The AI Future has run Notion's October agents yet, and the rebuild is only five days old, so independent tests of the new harness and Auto do not exist. What we do have is a good body of testing on Custom Agents and Meeting Notes from earlier in 2026.

Custom Agents hold up for team workflows. Lloyd Coombes at Tom's Guide set up a Slack-triggered agent that checks Slack threads and a Notion database before replying to a project-status question. He reported "a delay of seconds, and no further input is required outside of the initial setup." He started skeptical and ended convinced, mainly for larger teams. Wolfgang Wagner tested four agents as a freelancer. His transcript-analysis agent "actually saves me several manual steps," while a morning-briefing agent was still unproven. His warning: a working setup takes "a few days to weeks," because agents start with no access and need well-structured databases.

Meeting Notes is good for internal calls, weaker elsewhere. Sally, a competing note-taker, found summaries cleanly structured but said Notion does not identify speakers in the transcript and was weaker on German dialects. It called the feature "a solid recording and summarization feature, but not a serious meeting assistant." Fireflies adds that there is no calendar auto-join, so you have to start recording yourself. Both are rivals, so weigh their verdicts accordingly, but the limits they list match Notion's own documentation.

Writing and search are useful, not best in class. Asian Efficiency called workspace search "the standout feature" and "worth the Business plan alone for large workspaces," but said drafting quality "doesn't match Claude Pro." Eesel's review noted that most agent actions are "read-and-synthesize rather than write-and-execute across external tools," although the 150+ MCP connections in 3.8 aim squarely at that gap.

Who Notion AI is for

  • Choose Notion AI if your team already keeps docs, projects and meeting notes in Notion and you are on Business or ready to move there. The agents, search and meeting-to-task automations pay off most here.
  • Choose it if you want one AI bill instead of several. Business bundles AI, meeting notes and enterprise search for $20 per member, and ChatGPT Plus users can now bring their plan along.
  • Skip it if you are a solo user on Free or Plus who mainly wants a writing assistant. A $20 standalone chatbot will write better and you won't pay per seat.
  • Skip it if your important knowledge lives in a CRM or help desk rather than Notion, or you need speaker-labelled transcripts for sales calls and interviews.

Notion AI alternatives

Claude. Choose it if writing quality matters most, or if your team already lives in Anthropic's tools. Our Claude review covers the current plans. Verdict: the better writer, with less workspace context.

ChatGPT. Choose it if you want the broadest general assistant. Notion's bring-your-own-AI option even lets you use a ChatGPT plan inside Notion. See our ChatGPT GPT-6 review. Verdict: the best all-rounder, but it doesn't know your workspace.

Otter.ai. Choose it if meetings are the main job and you need auto-join, speaker labels and sharing for people outside Notion. Read our Otter.ai review. Verdict: a specialist note-taker beats a generalist one.

Verdict

Notion AI in October 2026 is the strongest it has been. The rebuilt agents, the Auto router and 150+ tool connections turn it into a real work assistant for teams, not a writing sidebar. Our rating is 4 out of 5. It loses points for a pricing model that keeps changing, a Free and Plus experience that is little more than a demo, and a credit system that adds a new thing for admins to watch. If your team runs on Notion, upgrade to Business and build two or three agents around your busiest workflows. If it doesn't, start with a standalone assistant and revisit Notion once its October claims have been tested independently.

FAQ

What is Notion AI?

Notion AI is the AI built into the Notion workspace. It includes Notion Agent, Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, Research mode and writing tools. Because it reads your pages and databases, it can summarize, draft and automate work using your own content rather than generic answers.

Is Notion AI free?

Only as a trial. The Free and Plus plans include a limited Notion AI trial with no monthly credits. Full access, including agents and meeting notes, requires the Business plan or Enterprise. Business members get 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits each month under the system introduced on 19 October 2026.

How much is Notion AI?

Notion AI comes with the Business plan, which costs $20 per member per month billed annually, or $24 billed monthly, as of October 2026. Enterprise is custom-priced. The separate $10 AI add-on has been discontinued, so there is no longer a cheaper way to add full AI to Plus.

How much does Notion AI cost?

Beyond the $20 Business seat, extra usage costs $10 per 1,000 Notion credits on monthly billing or $13 per 1,000 on annual billing. Notion estimates a simple agent task at about 5 credits and a complex one at about 25. From 1 December 2026, a one-hour meeting costs about 10 Standard credits.

What can Notion AI do?

It can write and edit pages, answer questions across your workspace and connected apps, transcribe and summarize meetings, fill database fields, and run Custom Agents that triage requests, file tasks or write reports on a schedule. Since October, agents can also browse the web and work on a single task for up to 24 hours.
