GPT-6 makes ChatGPT feel more like an app than a chatbot, and Intelligent UI is genuinely useful for calculations, comparisons and planning. Raw capability gains are modest, and free users get a noticeably weaker model, but ChatGPT Plus remains the best all-round AI assistant subscription for most people.

Visit ChatGPT (GPT-6 Sol and Luna)

ChatGPT has always been a text box with a very clever engine behind it. With the October rollout of GPT-6, OpenAI is trying to change the first half of that sentence. Answers can now arrive as interactive charts, forms, buttons and small tools, laid out by the model itself. OpenAI calls this Intelligent UI, and it is the most visible change to ChatGPT in a long time.

We looked at what GPT-6 brings to ChatGPT, how the models perform in credible independent testing, and whether the subscription tiers make sense for different users.

What it is

ChatGPT is OpenAI's consumer and business AI assistant, which the company says now has more than 1.2 billion weekly users. On October 7, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to the Chat tab, with paid subscribers moving to GPT-6 Sol first and Free and Go users getting the smaller, faster GPT-6 Luna from October 8.

The naming needs a quick map. GPT-6 is a family rather than a single model:

  • GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's frontier model, released in early September and aimed at long, agentic work such as research, coding and computer use.
  • GPT-6 Sol is the mainstream workhorse that powers ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.
  • GPT-6 Luna is the lightweight model for the Free and Go tiers.

An updated GPT-6.1 Sol arrived for developers at DevDay on September 29, available through the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex, according to InfoQ. Note that the October Chat update does not change the models behind ChatGPT's separate Work and Codex experiences.

Key features

Intelligent UI

The headline feature lets GPT-6 decide how an answer should look. Ask about a mortgage and you might get a working calculator; ask for a comparison and you may see a chart with tappable options. OpenAI built a library of native components plus a streaming compiler, so the interface renders progressively while the model is still writing. It falls back to plain text when that serves the question better.

OpenAI is candid that this is early, saying in its announcement that there is still work ahead to improve the model's design judgment, as CellCog noted. It works on the web and in updated mobile apps, but Techloy reports it is not available in the older ChatGPT desktop apps for Mac and Windows.

Faster, more deliberate answers

GPT-6 can begin answering while it is still reasoning, rather than thinking in full before responding. OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That figure comes from OpenAI's internal evaluations, not a standard public benchmark.

Better search judgment and honesty

OpenAI says GPT-6 is better at deciding when to search the web, more reliable at finding supporting evidence, more resistant to multi-turn jailbreak attempts, and less prone to unnecessary refusals. It is also meant to be clearer about the limits of what it can do.

The wider ChatGPT toolkit

GPT-6 sits inside an increasingly crowded product. Depending on plan, subscribers get deep research, custom GPTs, Sites, ChatGPT Work and Codex. At DevDay, OpenAI also announced sidebar plugins, persistent agents called Dots and a shared team workspace called ChatGPT Space, according to InfoQ. Most recently, ChatGPT gained the ability to use open Chrome tabs as context and take actions such as filling forms, The Neuron reported.

Pricing

ChatGPT's lineup has grown to six consumer tiers. The figures below reflect third-party pricing guides updated in October; OpenAI adjusts limits frequently, so check the in-app pricing page before you buy.

PlanPriceChat model
Free$0GPT-6 Luna, with capped uploads, images and tools
Go$8/monthGPT-6 Luna with higher limits; may show ads
Plus$20/monthGPT-6 Sol, no ads, plus Codex, Work, Sites and deep research
Pro$100, $200 or $500/monthGPT-6 Sol plus GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in chat; tiers differ by usage, with Ultrafast mode on Pro 500
Business$25/seat/month ($20 billed annually)Admin controls, SSO, business data excluded from training by default

Performance in independent testing

OpenAI's own benchmarks for GPT-6 are flattering, but the more useful signals come from outside testers.

  • Intelligence: Artificial Analysis scored GPT-6 Sol at 48 on its Intelligence Index, up only slightly from 47 for GPT-5.6 Sol, as summarized by DataCamp. GPT-6.1 Sol rose to 51.8, according to OrcaRouter.
  • The Luna gap: Free users should know that Luna scored 38 on the same index, a ten-point gap versus Sol. OpenAI's own tests put the gap at about two points. Luna is faster, though, at roughly 127 tokens per second versus 85 for Sol, per Techloy.
  • Hallucinations: Artificial Analysis found Sol's hallucination rate fell sharply, from 92% to 60%, but it also answered fewer questions (83%, down from 99%). Part of the gain, in other words, comes from declining to answer rather than knowing more.
  • Coding: Sol scored 57 on Artificial Analysis's Coding Agent Index, versus 55 for its predecessor.

DataCamp's hands-on coding test captured the new personality well. Asked to build a shortest-path visualizer, GPT-6 Sol produced working output on standard graphs but refused to run the algorithm on a graph with a negative edge, flagging an error. Earlier models warned and ploughed ahead. Whether that caution reads as rigor or friction depends on your use case.

Not everyone is happy. A widely shared thread on OpenAI's developer forum complained that the automatic visual elements appear even for simple questions and make the app feel heavier. That is anecdotal, but it matches a real risk of Intelligent UI: a model that decorates answers you wanted in two lines.

Speed is the other trade-off to keep in mind. Sol is the more capable model, but Luna responds noticeably faster. If you mostly ask quick factual questions or draft short messages, the free tier will feel snappy. For multi-step analysis, the paid model earns its keep.

Who it's for

  • Casual users get a genuine upgrade on the Free tier, though Luna is noticeably weaker than Sol on hard reasoning.
  • Plus subscribers remain the sweet spot. At $20, you get Sol, the full toolkit and access to Astra inside Work and Codex.
  • Power users and researchers who need Astra in everyday chat will need a Pro tier, and should budget accordingly.
  • Teams get familiar admin controls on Business, with the caveat that Intelligent UI depends on admin settings in Enterprise.

Alternatives

Claude from Anthropic remains the main rival for writing and coding; Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5 the same day OpenAI released Sol and Luna, according to DataCamp. Google Gemini is the natural pick for Workspace-heavy users, with Gemini 4 Argon now offered to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. If your main use is research with citations, a dedicated AI search tool may be leaner than ChatGPT's growing feature set.

Verdict

GPT-6 is less a leap in raw intelligence than a rethink of how an assistant presents what it knows. Intelligent UI is impressive when it works, especially for calculations, comparisons and planning, and the faster start to answers is noticeable. The independent numbers, however, show modest capability gains for Sol and a meaningful drop-off for free users on Luna. ChatGPT remains the most complete AI assistant on the market, and Plus is still the plan most people should pick.

What we like

  • Intelligent UI turns answers into charts, forms and interactive tools
  • Answers start faster thanks to interleaved thinking and answering
  • Plus at $20 bundles Sol, Codex, Work, Sites and deep research
  • Lower hallucination rate in independent testing
  • GPT-6 reaches every tier, including Free

What could be better

  • Independent tests show only modest intelligence gains for Sol
  • Free and Go users get Luna, which trails Sol noticeably
  • Visual elements can clutter simple answers
  • Plan lineup and model naming are increasingly confusing
