Leonardo AI Review 2026: A Strong Image Generator With Tricky Token Maths
Leonardo AI is a capable image and video generator with a usable free plan, but tokens drain fast and Canva Business no longer includes it.
Our verdict on Leonardo.Ai
Leonardo AI is a strong, flexible image and video generator with a free plan that is genuinely usable. Creators who want many models and custom training in one place will get good value, but anyone who wants simplicity or makes lots of video should budget carefully or look elsewhere.
Pricing Free (150 tokens/day); Essential $12/mo; Premium $30/mo; Ultimate $60/mo; Team Starter $72/mo (3 seats); Team Growth $144/mo (3 seats); Enterprise custom; API pay as you go. Up to 20% off yearly.
Visit Leonardo.AiLeonardo AI is one of the best all-round AI image generators you can use for free, and it's a capable AI video tool too. The free plan gives you 150 tokens a day, and paid plans run from $12 to $60 a month. The catch? Everything costs tokens, the interface asks a lot of you, and the Canva Business perk that handed out a free paid plan ended this month.
I didn't run my own test batch for this one. Instead, I reviewed Leonardo.Ai as it stands in late October 2026, drawing on the official pricing page, Canva's own help notes, independent hands-on tests and a few hundred user ratings. Here's what all of that adds up to, including the bits that annoyed people most.
What is Leonardo AI?
Leonardo.Ai is a web and mobile platform for generating and editing images and short videos from text prompts and reference pictures. It was founded in Sydney in December 2022, and its first in-house foundation model, Phoenix, arrived in June 2024, according to Wikipedia's company history. Canva announced it was buying Leonardo in July 2024, when the startup had about 120 staff, iClarified reported.
So yes, Leonardo is an AI image generator. But in 2026 it's closer to a model marketplace with its own tools wrapped around it. Paid plans include access to 80+ models, and the official pricing page lists third-party options such as Nano Banana, GPT Image, Veo, Kling, Seedance and Seedream alongside Leonardo's own models. There's also the Leonardo AI app on iPhone and Android, which gets frequent updates; the latest iOS release notes push Halloween-themed Blueprints.
Key features
Lucid Origin and the in-house models
Leonardo's flagship image model is Lucid Origin, a full-HD text-to-image model that launched in August 2025 and ranked seventh on the Artificial Analysis text-to-image leaderboard that year, per Wikipedia. A September 2026 pricing breakdown by Omid Saffari, citing Artificial Analysis figures, puts the Ultra mode at around 22 seconds per image and Fast at around 12, and says the model renders readable text reliably. That's a big deal if you make posters, thumbnails or brand assets, where garbled lettering usually ruins the result.
Third-party models in one place
This is the feature I'd actually pay for. Instead of juggling five subscriptions, Essential and higher plans let you pick from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and other models in the same workspace, according to the pricing page. The trade-off is cost: third-party models always burn tokens at full rate and never qualify for the "unlimited" relaxed queue, even on the top plan, as eesel's pricing analysis points out.
Video generation
Video is included on every plan, even Free, but it's token-hungry. Leonardo's own Motion 2.0 models and a handful of partner models (MiniMax, Wan 2.6, Hailuo 2.3) get relaxed, unlimited generation on Ultimate and Team plans only, per the official plan details. eesel estimates that a single 8-second Veo 3 clip costs roughly as much as 300+ basic image generations. Ouch.
Blueprints
Blueprints launched in November 2025 as pre-built workflows that bundle a model, prompt structure and settings into one click. The first set included Instant Brand Kit, Product Lifestyle Photoshoot and Instant Animate, Mediaweek reported. They're a sensible answer to Leonardo's biggest problem, which is that the main generator has a lot of knobs.
Realtime Canvas, editing and upscaling
Realtime Canvas turns rough sketches or typed prompts into images that update as you work, and Motion animates still images, per Wikipedia. Saffari found the canvas useful for moodboards and client-facing concept work. Editing tools, upscaling and background removal round things out; the API now includes access to remove.bg background removal, according to the pricing page.
Custom model training
You can train your own models on a set of images to get a consistent style or character. Essential allows 10 trainings a month, Premium 20 and Ultimate 50. Independent reviewer Fahim Joharder trained a model on 15 images of a client's brand style and said it produced consistent results, and several Capterra reviewers single out character consistency as a reason they stay.
Leonardo AI pricing
Prices below were checked on Leonardo's official pricing page in October 2026. They're monthly prices in US dollars, before tax. Annual billing is advertised as up to 20% off, but the page doesn't show the annual totals.
| Plan | Price | Fast tokens | Rollover bank | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 150 per day | None | Auto model only, public creations, video included, no third-party models |
| Essential | $12/mo | 8,500 per month | 25,500 | 80+ models, private creations, 10 model trainings, 2 concurrent jobs |
| Premium | $30/mo | 25,000 per month | 75,000 | Relaxed image generation on select models, 20 trainings, 3 concurrent jobs |
| Ultimate | $60/mo | 60,000 per month | 180,000 | Relaxed image and video on select models, 50 trainings, 6 concurrent jobs |
| Team Starter | $72/mo (3 seats at $24) | 75,000 shared | 225,000 | Private team generations, relaxed image and video |
| Team Growth | $144/mo (3 seats at $48) | 180,000 shared | 540,000 | Starter features plus training on team tokens |
| Enterprise and API | Custom / pay as you go | Custom | n/a | API credit never expires, up to 10 concurrent jobs |
So what does the free plan really include? You get 150 fast tokens a day that reset daily and don't carry over, the Auto model only, and limited access to Ultra Quality, Blueprints, Realtime Canvas and Elements. No Leo Agent, no third-party models and no private generations. Free users also grant Leonardo rights to what they make, though they get a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence for commercial use; paid subscribers keep full ownership, per the pricing page. Two reviewers (Fahim AI and eesel) say heavy use of premium models can drain the daily allowance in about 20 minutes.
A few more pricing details worth knowing. Unused tokens roll into a bank up to each plan's cap. Top-up packs never expire but need an active subscription. eesel also notes that failed generations still cost tokens, and that upgrades apply immediately while downgrades wait for the end of the billing cycle.
And the big October change: Canva Business subscribers used to get Leonardo Essential at no extra cost. According to Canva's help centre, new Canva Business subscribers from 1 September 2026 no longer get it, and existing subscribers lost Essential access on 11 October 2026, dropping to the free plan. Canva's notice blames the change on fraudulent use of the perk. If you relied on that bundle, you're now paying $12 a month or living on 150 daily tokens.
Performance and independent testing
Since we didn't run our own tests, here's what people who did found.
The most detailed recent test comes from PicLumen's blog in July 2026. Worth flagging: PicLumen sells a competing tool. Its reviewer ran a product shot of a ceramic coffee cup through Lucid Origin, a neon-market character portrait through FLUX.2 Pro, and an image-to-video push-in. The product image was realistic and usable for a blog, but the shadows didn't match the window light. The portrait had a strong jacket and lighting, but uneven skin, odd eyelashes and rain that looked like dots. The video worked for a social teaser, though the scene layout drifted from the source image. Verdict: capable, not effortless.
Fahim Joharder, who says he paid for the plan himself and used it across five client projects, praised the model library and custom training but found that very detailed prompts lost details and characters weren't always consistent across images.
Older tests line up with this. In a December 2024 head-to-head, TechRadar's Craig Hale gave Midjourney a 4-2 win over Leonardo, writing that "Midjourney proved much better at handling complex requests." TechRadar's earlier full review by Nigel Powell liked the image quality, text rendering and speed but called the dashboard overwhelming and inpainting clunky. Those tests predate Lucid Origin, so treat them as background, not a current verdict.
Put together, the pattern is pretty consistent:
- Image quality is strong, especially for product shots, stylised art and anything with text in it.
- Complex, multi-part prompts are the weak spot. Several testers saw details dropped or misread.
- Video is good for drafts and social clips, less so for anything that needs stable motion.
- The interface is busy. Nearly every reviewer mentions it.
Content filters are another recurring gripe. A March 2026 Trustpilot review called the filters excessive, and another said recent updates made outputs less accurate. Not universal, but common enough to mention.
Who it's for
- Content creators and marketers who want lots of styles, readable text and a free plan to experiment on before paying.
- Brand and product teams who need consistent characters or styles and will actually use custom model training and Blueprints.
- People who want many models in one bill. If you'd otherwise pay separately for Veo, Kling and an image model, Leonardo's mix is convenient.
- Developers who want an image and video API with non-expiring credit.
Who should skip it? Anyone who wants one prompt box and zero settings, and anyone planning to make lots of third-party video. Those tokens disappear fast.
Leonardo AI alternatives
- Midjourney is the pick if artistic quality on complex prompts matters most; it beat Leonardo in TechRadar's head-to-head, though it doesn't offer the same multi-model mix.
- ChatGPT is simpler if you already pay for it and want images through conversation. See our ChatGPT GPT-6 review.
- Higgsfield and Sora are worth a look if video is your main goal. Read our Higgsfield AI review and Sora review.

Verdict
Leonardo AI earns a 4 out of 5. It does a lot well: strong in-house image models, a huge choice of third-party models, video on every plan, useful custom training and a free tier that's genuinely usable for light work. The ratings back that up, with 4.8 stars from about 11,000 ratings on the App Store and 4.6 on Capterra.
But you pay for that breadth in complexity and token maths. Premium models and video drain allowances quickly, "unlimited" only covers select models, and losing the Canva Business perk makes the value story weaker than it was a month ago. Start on the free plan. If you hit the daily cap every day and actually use the extra models, Essential at $12 is fair. Premium only makes sense if you'll lean on relaxed image generation.
