Otter AI Review 2026: Features, Pricing, Free Plan Limits and Alternatives
Otter AI makes meeting transcription painless, but tight free-plan caps, uneven accuracy on messy calls and a privacy lawsuit mean it's worth comparing first.
Our verdict on Otter.ai
Otter AI is one of the easiest ways to get searchable transcripts and summaries from English-language meetings, and Pro is fair value for individuals. Its free plan is restrictive, accuracy slips on messy calls and the privacy lawsuit is unresolved, so teams that need many languages or a truly free tool should compare Fathom and Fireflies first.
Pricing Basic free (300 min/mo, 30-min cap); Pro $16.99/mo or $8.33/mo billed annually; Business $30/user/mo or $19.99/user/mo billed annually; Enterprise custom.
Visit Otter.aiOtter AI does one job very well: it sits in your Zoom, Teams or Google Meet call, writes down what everyone says and hands you a tidy summary with action items before you've closed the tab. If that's all you need, the free plan will get you started and the Pro plan is one of the cheaper paid tiers in the category. Where it gets complicated is everything around that core: tight minute caps, accuracy that slips in messy calls, and a privacy lawsuit that hasn't gone away.
We reviewed Otter.ai as it stands in late October 2026, drawing on Otter's own announcements, independent reviews, published accuracy figures and user feedback. Nobody on our team ran a hands-on test for this piece, so where we talk about how it performs, we tell you who did the testing.
Short version? A solid, easy meeting transcription AI with a generous-feeling free plan that turns out to be less generous than rivals'. Worth trying. Worth reading the fine print, too.
What is Otter AI?
Otter.ai is an AI note taking and transcription service from a Mountain View company founded in 2016 and led by CEO Sam Liang, according to Everything PR's company profile. Its bot, once called OtterPilot and now the Otter Meeting Agent, joins your calendar meetings, transcribes them live, labels speakers and produces summaries and action items. You can also record in person with the mobile app or import audio and video files.
It's a big business now. Otter says it has more than 40 million users and teams at over 86% of the Fortune 500, and on October 20 it announced $320 million in non-dilutive growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund, as reported by The Next Web and SiliconANGLE. SiliconANGLE explains that the fund takes a share of the revenue it helps generate rather than equity.
The pitch has shifted too. In April, Otter started calling itself a "conversational knowledge engine": less a transcription app, more a searchable memory of every conversation your company has, as described in its April 28 announcement.
Key features of Otter AI note taking
Live transcription and the Meeting Agent
The core is still real-time transcription with speaker identification. Connect Google or Outlook calendars and the agent joins meetings automatically, which is convenient right up until it joins one you didn't want recorded. In March 2025 Otter added a voice-activated Meeting Agent that can answer questions from your meeting history, schedule follow-ups and draft emails when you talk to it during the call, according to Otter's launch post.
Summaries, action items and templates
Every meeting gets an overview, an outline and action items. Reviewer Kripesh Adwani, who tested Otter for his June 2026 review, found the summaries well-structured and liked being able to switch templates, such as a 1:1 format, and add custom prompts. He also noted that summaries couldn't be edited or exported and that there was no manual note-taking. Lindy's tester, Michelle Liu, called the summaries surface-level in her March 2026 review (Lindy sells a competing assistant, so weigh that accordingly).
AI Chat and MCP connectors
AI Chat lets you ask questions across one meeting, a channel or your whole history, with answers linked back to the moment in the transcript. In April Otter rebuilt it to be private by default and added connectors that pull live data from Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Jira and Salesforce, plus an expanded MCP server so tools like ChatGPT and Claude can use your meeting history as context, per No Jitter. If you already use Claude day to day (see our Claude review), that's a genuinely useful bridge.
Otter for Desktop
The same April release brought Otter for Desktop on Mac and Windows, which records audio from any app, including voice calls and in-person discussions, not just scheduled video meetings. That matters because bot-free capture is exactly what rivals like Granola built their reputations on.
Live Assist (Enterprise)
In July Otter launched Live Assist, a coaching agent that shows private tip cards during calls (questions to ask, points to cover) and ticks off objectives as you go. It's grounded in your own playbooks and past meetings, and sales calls are the main use so far. It's for Enterprise customers only.
Study tools for students
Otter's back-to-school release on August 26 added study guides, quizzes and exam prep sheets generated from lecture transcripts, along with semester-wide AI Chat. More on the student pricing below.
Otter AI pricing and plans
Otter's own pricing page wasn't reachable for us, so the table below is based on two third-party breakdowns that say they checked it in summer 2026: Castmagic (verified August 20, 2026) and Sonix (updated August 5, 2026). Both agree on the numbers. Prices were checked against these sources in October 2026; both publishers compete with Otter, and Otter runs periodic promotions, so confirm on its site before you buy.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Minutes | Per conversation | File imports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | Free | 300 per month | 30 min | 3 per account, lifetime |
| Pro | $16.99 | $8.33/mo ($99.99/yr) | 1,200 per month | 90 min | 10 per month |
| Business | $30/user | $19.99/user/mo | Unlimited meeting minutes | 4 hours | Listed as unlimited* |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
*Sonix says Business caps imported-file transcription at 6,000 minutes per user per month, while Castmagic lists imports as unlimited. Check before you rely on it.
Is Otter AI free?
Yes, with limits that bite quickly. The free Basic plan gives you 300 minutes a month, a 30-minute cap on each conversation, one meeting at a time and just three file imports for the life of the account, per Castmagic's breakdown. It does include the Zoom, Teams and Google Meet integrations, speaker identification and AI Chat. That 30-minute cap is the real catch: an hour-long meeting gets cut off halfway.
Compare that with Fathom's free plan, which offers unlimited recordings and transcripts, and Otter's free tier looks more like a trial than a home.
Students and enterprise
Students with a .edu email have had 20% off Pro, and Otter ran a 50% discount on the annual Pro plan through the end of September 2026, according to its August announcement. If you're a student weighing options, our best free AI tools for students guide is worth a look. Enterprise adds SSO, advanced security, HIPAA support and Live Assist. There's no public price, though Vendr data cited by Jamie puts the average annual contract around $17,424 across 16 deals.
Performance and independent testing
Here's the honest picture: Otter is accurate enough on clean audio and noticeably worse when calls get messy.
The most rigorous number we found comes from a peer-reviewed 2023 study of psychiatric interviews, which measured a median word error rate of 19.2% for Zoom's Otter-powered live transcription, behind Whisper (14.8%) and Amazon Transcribe (8.9%), as summarized by University Transcriptions. That's a tough clinical setting with live captions, so it's a floor rather than a typical result. A blog benchmark in the same roundup put Otter at 12.6% WER on good-quality business meetings.
AIProductivity.ai reports Otter at roughly 88 to 92% accuracy on its free tier, 89% on a 2,000-word dictation test (rising to 94% with 20 custom vocabulary terms), about 85% in noisy rooms and 80 to 85% with strong accents. It doesn't publish full methodology, so treat those as indicative. It also puts Fireflies a couple of points ahead.
The hands-on reviewers line up with that. Kripesh Adwani wrote that he "wouldn't say the transcription accuracy is very impressive" and that Otter often matched lines to the wrong speaker; he also hit glitches that needed app reloads (source). Michelle Liu found it consistent in quiet one-on-ones and lectures, with fast search, but said speaker labels needed cleanup in group calls (source). UCStrategies' 2026 review rated it 4 out of 5 while flagging cross-talk, inconsistent multilingual performance and aggressive auto-join behavior.
Language support is narrow. Otter added French and Spanish in October 2024 and Japanese in November 2025, according to its press page, while Fathom supports dozens of languages per Scribbl's comparison.
Privacy and the lawsuit
This is the part you shouldn't skip. Four proposed class actions filed from August 2025 were consolidated as In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation in the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs allege the meeting bot records attendees without their consent and that Otter used the data to train its speech models. Otter denies any unlawful interception and says its terms put the consent duty on account holders. As of UC Today's April 2026 report, a motion to dismiss was pending with a hearing set for May 20; we couldn't confirm a ruling since then.
Practical advice: turn off "auto-join all meetings" in settings, tell people when you're recording and, if you handle sensitive data, look closely at Enterprise. Everything PR's profile says Otter trains on de-identified data by default, with opt-out available only at the Enterprise tier (source). Otter did announce HIPAA compliance in July 2025 and has held SOC 2 Type II since 2023, per its press page.
Who it's for
Otter suits people who live in English-language video calls and want searchable notes without lifting a finger: consultants, recruiters, managers running lots of one-on-ones, and students recording lectures. Sales teams on Enterprise get the most from Live Assist and CRM connectors. It's also a natural fit if you want your meeting history available inside ChatGPT or Claude through MCP.
Skip it, or at least look around, if you need many languages, if most of your meetings run past 30 minutes and you won't pay, or if your clients and legal team are uneasy about bots joining calls. For a wider look at the category, see our best AI tools for productivity roundup.
Otter AI alternatives
- Fathom. The pick if you want a free plan you won't outgrow fast: unlimited recordings and transcripts, with Premium at $16 per user a month billed annually, per Scribbl. It doesn't do live captions or in-person recording like Otter.
- Fireflies.ai. Better for sales teams that push notes into a CRM, from $10 per user a month billed annually, according to Scribbl's October 2026 price check. Its free plan is generous only if you let the bot auto-join.
- Microsoft Copilot. If your company already runs on Teams and Microsoft 365, built-in meeting recaps may make a separate notetaker redundant. Our Microsoft AI review covers what you get. Notion users should also check the meeting notes in Notion AI.
Verdict
Otter AI is still one of the easiest ways to get transcripts and summaries out of your meetings, and Pro at $8.33 a month on annual billing is fair value for individuals. The April upgrades, especially MCP connectors and the desktop app, show it's moving in the right direction.
But the free plan's 30-minute cap, middling accuracy in noisy or multi-speaker calls, limited languages and the unresolved privacy case keep it from the top tier. We rate it 3.5 out of 5: a good default for English-speaking professionals who'll pay for Pro, and a tool to compare carefully against Fathom and Fireflies if you won't.
