Perplexity AI vs ChatGPT: which is better in 2026?

Perplexity AI vs ChatGPT in late 2026: Perplexity wins for cited research and news, ChatGPT for writing, coding and all-round use. Both cost $20 a month.

A laptop and notebook on a desk

Perplexity AI vs ChatGPT comes down to one split in late October 2026. Perplexity is the better pick for cited, up-to-date research. ChatGPT is the better all-round assistant for writing, coding, images and everyday tasks.

The choice matters because both main plans cost the same $20 a month. What that $20 buys is very different.

The AI Future did not run its own hands-on test for this comparison. The findings below draw on official help pages, pricing guides, published side-by-side tests by Tom's Guide and G2, independent leaderboards and user reviews, as of late October 2026. Where someone else ran a test, they are named.

Perplexity AI vs ChatGPT: quick verdict

  • Research with sources: Perplexity. Every answer carries inline citations, while ChatGPT shows them only when its search tool runs, according to Dupple.
  • Breaking news and fresh facts: Perplexity, in most published tests.
  • Writing, planning and following tricky instructions: ChatGPT. It won four of five rounds in a Tom's Guide head-to-head.
  • Coding, images and agents: ChatGPT, thanks to Codex, native image generation and ChatGPT Work.
  • Trying many AI models with one subscription: Perplexity. Its paid plans include models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and others.
  • Free use: ChatGPT. Its free text chat is described as unlimited; Perplexity's free plan caps advanced searches.

Our take: Perplexity is a research tool that can chat. ChatGPT is a chat assistant that can research. Many heavy users pay for both.

Features compared

How Perplexity AI is different from ChatGPT

The biggest difference is design. Perplexity is "an answer engine" that returns web-sourced responses with citations and a model picker, NeuralTrust's October comparison explains. ChatGPT combines chat, web search, a Work agent and the Codex coding tool.

G2's Soundarya Jayaraman summed up the gap in one line in her April 2026 head-to-head: "Perplexity shows its sources. ChatGPT shows its confidence."

Models

Perplexity does not build a single flagship chatbot model. It routes questions to models from several labs. As of October 17, Pro subscribers can choose GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 and Nemotron 3.5 Super VL, according to the Perplexity Help Center.

Max adds GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1. Free users get the automatic "Best" option and cannot pick an advanced model manually, the same page says.

ChatGPT runs only OpenAI models. On October 7, OpenAI began moving Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users to GPT-6 Sol in the main Chat tab, Android Headlines reported. Free and Go accounts began getting the lighter GPT-6 Luna on October 8. Plus also includes GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model, Lindy notes.

Search and citations

Perplexity shows sources on every answer. ChatGPT search is available on every plan, including Free, but citations appear only when the search tool runs, Dupple reports.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant shows live web search answers 44% faster on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, per Android Headlines. That is a company claim, not an independent test.

Agents and browsers

Perplexity introduced Computer on February 25, 2026, describing it as a digital worker that runs sub-agents in isolated environments, NeuralTrust reports. It runs on credits. Pro includes a one-time bonus of 4,000 credits, while Max adds 10,000 credits a month plus a 35,000-credit bonus, according to Krater. Perplexity's Comet browser is free.

ChatGPT answers with ChatGPT Work, an agent for longer multi-step jobs, and Codex for coding. OpenAI retired its Atlas browser on August 9, 2026, moving its features into the desktop app and a Chrome extension, NeuralTrust notes. Our Perplexity Computer vs other AI agents comparison covers the agent side in more depth.

Writing, images and extras

ChatGPT has more built-in tools. Plus unlocks custom GPTs, Sites, scheduled tasks and expanded image generation, Lindy reports. Its new Intelligent UI can add clickable diagrams and small widgets to answers.

Perplexity can generate images on paid plans using third-party models. In G2's test, Pro used generators including GPT Image 1, Nano Banana and Seedream 4.5. Perplexity also offers Spaces for organising research and a Learn Mode for study, per its help center.

Quality of output: same prompts, side by side

Two Tom's Guide writers ran the same prompts through both tools in 2026, with opposite results. AI editor Amanda Caswell ran five everyday prompts in March. ChatGPT won four. Elton Jones ran three research prompts. Perplexity won all three.

Three prompts from those tests, and what each tool produced according to the write-ups, are below. Tom's Guide described the outputs rather than publishing them in full.

Prompt 1: breaking news

"Explain a major AI or tech news story from the past 7 days in simple terms. Then tell me why it actually matters for everyday people."
  • ChatGPT: a readable explanation, but it presented a Google Workspace update from March 10, 2026 as if it were from the past week.
  • Perplexity: identified Nvidia's GTC 2026 conference (March 16 to 19) and explained the industry's shift from AI training to inference.
  • Winner: Perplexity. Caswell said it "functioned as a true news reporter."

Prompt 2: a real-world money plan

"I have $500 to reduce my monthly expenses starting this week. Based on a typical U.S. household, give me a step-by-step plan to save the most money quickly. Prioritize actions that take less than 1 hour each."
  • ChatGPT: a negotiation and behaviour plan that did not require spending the $500.
  • Perplexity: a home efficiency and bulk-buying guide that needed the $500 spent upfront.
  • Winner: ChatGPT, for better reading the "starting this week" and "under 1 hour" limits.

Prompt 3: a research brainstorm

"Give me 10 research topics on tech journalism, why they matter in 2026, one challenge per topic, and one key research question"
  • ChatGPT: did what was asked. One topic was "The Rise of AI Search and Its Impact on Tech Media Traffic," and it offered to turn a topic into a full research proposal.
  • Perplexity: produced a similar topic, with the research question "How do AI answer engines change audience trust, source attribution, and traffic patterns for tech news compared with traditional search and direct visits?" It added five follow-up questions and links to sources such as the Reuters Institute.
  • Winner: Perplexity, for fuller answers and linked sources.

Coding follows the same pattern. In G2's April test, ChatGPT's code "worked perfectly on the first try," and G2 called Perplexity "not ideal for development workflows." G2 tested older models, so treat that as a guide.

Our take: the tests line up with the products' design. Perplexity wins when the answer lives on the web. ChatGPT wins when the answer depends on judgment, tone or code.

Accuracy: what independent data shows

Neither tool is error-free. On the Arena Search leaderboard of August 24, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol ranked first with 1257 points, while Perplexity's best Sonar model ranked 29th with 1139, NeuralTrust reports. The board scores API search models, and Perplexity's app often routes questions to other labs' models.

In a March 2025 Tow Center study, Perplexity answered incorrectly 37% of the time, the lowest error rate of eight engines tested, according to the same NeuralTrust summary of Nieman Lab coverage. That study predates today's models. Check any claim that matters, whichever tool you use.

Pricing compared

Both main plans cost $20 a month. Perplexity is cheaper on annual billing. ChatGPT has a cheaper monthly entry tier and more top-end options.

TierPerplexityChatGPT
Free$0: "Best" model, citations, limited Pro Searches$0: GPT-6 Luna text chat, limited uploads, images and deep research
BudgetNoneGo, $8/month (may include ads)

Power userMax, $200/monthPro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500 ($100, $200 or $500/month)
TeamsEnterprise Pro $40, Enterprise Max $325 per seat/month (reported)Business, $25/user/month or $20 billed annually (2+ users)

Prices checked October 2026 via Krater's Perplexity pricing guide, NeuralTrust and Lindy's ChatGPT pricing guide. Perplexity's Enterprise prices come from third-party reports, not its public pricing page.

One catch on Perplexity Pro: its 4,000 Computer credits are a one-time bonus, and recurring monthly credits are a Max feature, Krater found. On ChatGPT, Go is the only paid tier that may show ads, Lindy notes.

For privacy, both companies train on consumer content by default unless you opt out in settings, and both say they do not train on business data, NeuralTrust reports.

What reviewers and users say about each

Perplexity

Reviewers praise its research depth. "Perplexity goes out of its way to deliver more comprehensive information with enough valid data sources to back up everything it generates," Elton Jones wrote for Tom's Guide.

Users rate it slightly below ChatGPT. Perplexity holds 4.5 out of 5 on G2 and 4.2 from 35 reviews on Capterra.

Some paying users are unhappy with recent plan changes. A mid-September thread on r/perplexity_ai titled "Perplexity Pro is an absolute joke now" argued that the strongest models moved behind Max, Krater reports. Perplexity's own model table confirms that Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra are Max-only on consumer plans.

Perplexity also faces at least seven publisher lawsuits, from plaintiffs including Dow Jones, The New York Times, Reddit, Britannica and CNN, NeuralTrust reports, citing Startup Fortune.

ChatGPT

Reviewers credit its range. Caswell wrote in Tom's Guide that "ChatGPT’s sheer versatility, creative flair, and nuanced understanding of complex instructions gave it the edge it needed to advance."

ChatGPT holds 4.7 out of 5 on G2, where users gave it 96% for ease of use. On Capterra it scores 4.4 from 407 reviews.

The main caution is accuracy. OpenAI's help center warns that "search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect," as quoted by NeuralTrust. For a full look at the assistant, read our ChatGPT with GPT-6 review.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Perplexity if:

  • You need a source for every claim, for school, client work or reporting.
  • You follow news, markets or fast-moving topics.
  • You want to compare GPT, Claude and Gemini answers without three subscriptions.
  • You want a free AI browser in Comet.

Choose ChatGPT if:

  • You write, plan or brainstorm more than you research.
  • You code, or want an agent such as ChatGPT Work or Codex.
  • You want image generation, voice and custom GPTs in one place.
  • You will not pay, or want a cheap $8 tier.

If neither fits, our guides to the best AI search engines and the best AI like ChatGPT cover other options. Weighing ChatGPT against Anthropic's assistant instead? See Claude AI vs ChatGPT. For academic papers specifically, our Consensus AI tools roundup lists research-first alternatives.

What happens next: both lineups change fast. Perplexity says its model list "is not a commitment to keep any individual model available," and OpenAI is still rolling GPT-6 into ChatGPT. Check each app's model picker before you subscribe.

FAQ

Is Perplexity AI better than ChatGPT?

For research, yes. Perplexity cites sources on every answer and has won most published research and news tests. For writing, coding, images and general tasks, ChatGPT is stronger and won four of five rounds in a 2026 Tom's Guide test. Both main plans cost $20 a month, so pick by what you do most.

How is Perplexity AI different from ChatGPT?

Perplexity is an answer engine. It searches the web for every question, shows citations and lets paid users pick models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. ChatGPT is a general assistant built on OpenAI's own models, with search as one tool alongside image generation, Codex, custom GPTs and the ChatGPT Work agent.

Can you use ChatGPT models inside Perplexity?

Yes. As of October 17, 2026, Perplexity Pro includes OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol, and Max adds GPT-6 Astra, according to Perplexity's help center. You get Perplexity's search and citations on top, but not ChatGPT-only features such as custom GPTs, Codex or ChatGPT Work.

Which is better for students?

Perplexity suits research papers because every answer links to sources you can check and cite. ChatGPT suits drafting, explanations and study planning. Check your school's AI policy first, and always verify sources yourself, since independent tests show both tools still make citation errors.

Is it worth paying for both?

For heavy users, often yes. Perplexity Pro billed annually plus ChatGPT Plus costs about $37 a month, Dupple calculates. That covers cited research and a full-featured assistant. Light users can start with both free plans and upgrade only the one they hit limits on.
