Visit Emochi AI (FlowGPT / Kaon AI)Here is the short version. Emochi AI is a free character chat app where you roleplay with anime-style AI characters, or build your own, on Android, iOS and the web. It is made by FlowGPT, now part of Berkeley-based Kaon AI, and it is one of the most downloaded AI social apps of 2026. It is good at what it is built for: fast, emotional, story-driven chat. It is not a general assistant, and the free plan is tightly metered.
A note on method before the numbers. Nobody at The AI Future ran hands-on tests of Emochi for this review, so there are no screenshots or stopwatch timings from us here. We compared Emochi AI using the official App Store listing, published third-party reviews, app-market data and funding reports, as of late October 2026. Where someone else made a claim, we say who.
Our verdict: 3.5 out of 5. It is a solid pick if you want an emochi AI chat for casual roleplay and you accept the limits. If you need privacy, factual answers or a teen-safe space, look elsewhere.

What is Emochi AI?
Think of Emochi as a chat window bolted onto a large library of fictional characters. You pick a character, or write one, and the language model plays that role while you write your side of the scene. The App Store description lists open-ended chat about anime, manga and games, custom characters with personas and backstories, video stories that reveal a character's background, AI-generated images based on your chats, and "simulated lover" roleplay. The seller is listed as FlowGPT Co.
FlowGPT started life as a marketplace for prompts and models. According to AI Weekly, summarising a Variety report from July 2026, the parent company Kaon AI "still owns FlowGPT", but "the flagship consumer product is now Emochi". The same report says Kaon raised $60 million from investors including B Capital, Redpoint Ace, Goodwater Capital and DCM.
The scale is real. The company says Emochi has about $45 million in annual recurring revenue, more than 2 million daily active users and an average of 150 minutes of use per user per day, with a median user age of 23 to 25, per AI Weekly. Those are, in AI Weekly's words, "Kaon's own numbers, not independently audited". Independent signals point the same way: AppBrain lists Emochi: Chat With Character at 10,000,000+ Android installs with an update on 14 October 2026, and app-intelligence firm Insightrackr ranked it the number one AI social app by downloads in May 2026, in the top three by revenue alongside Character AI and Saylo.
If you have used Character AI, the mental model transfers almost one to one. Emochi leans harder into anime aesthetics, generated images and paid "moments".
Key features
Character library and discovery
Most of what you do in Emochi starts in the public library. SimilarLabs describes categories such as Romance, Drama, BL, Comedy and Friend, and calls discovery fast. The trade-off is the usual one for user-made content: quality varies a lot from bot to bot, and SimilarLabs flags exactly that.
Custom character creation
You can define a character's personality, appearance, backstory, conversation style, voice, knowledge and starting scenario, according to SimilarLabs. Paid tiers raise the length limits on character definitions and custom instructions. One accessibility gap shows up in an App Store review: a blind user wrote that "you have to add a photo to create a character", and asked for an option to skip the image (App Store).
Voice, images and "exclusive moments"
Emochi adds media on top of text. The free plan includes a small daily quota of voice messages and image generations, and a single "exclusive moment", which is a premium story scene (SimilarLabs). BlueStacks' listing also mentions anime-style animated chat and roleplay storylines. Sources disagree on voice: FlashGet Kids says the app has no voice communication, while the plan lists from SimilarLabs and AIChief both include voice messages. We treat voice messages as present, since they appear in the plan quotas.
Model choice, memory and smart replies
Emochi lets you switch between several chat models. Free users get two; Plus adds four premium models plus memory and response controls; Ultra adds two "flagship" models (SimilarLabs). AIChief also lists "bot context memory" and adjustable creativity as Plus features (AIChief). Smart replies suggest your next line when you are stuck, with five a day on the free plan.
Emochi AI pricing and plans
Emochi is free to download. Prices below come from the SimilarLabs review, which checked them in July 2026; we could not open an official pricing page, and in-app prices can vary by country and store. These were the most recent published figures we could find when we checked in October 2026, so confirm the price in the app before you subscribe.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2 chat models, 5 voice messages a day, 5 smart replies a day, 1 exclusive moment, 2 image generations a day, ads |
| Plus | $9.99/month, $26.99/quarter or $99.99/year | No ads, 4 premium models, memory and response controls, higher quotas, custom instructions, unlimited messages and bot creation |
| Ultra | $16.99/month | 2,000 Mochi (in-app currency) a month, 2 flagship models, higher quotas, longer character and instruction limits, unlimited messages and bot creation |
What the free plan really includes
The free tier is usable for trying characters, but the media quotas are small. Here is the worked example. At 5 voice messages and 2 images a day, a 30-day month gives you at most 150 voice messages and 60 images. If you chat for an hour a day and want voice on most replies, you will run out within the first few minutes of each session. Text chat is the part you can rely on; the extras are a sample.
On paid plans, the billing period matters more than the tier name:
| Plus billing | Upfront | Effective per month | Saving vs monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $9.99 | $9.99 | 0% |
| Quarterly | $26.99 | about $9.00 | about 10% |
| Yearly | $99.99 | about $8.33 | about 17% ($19.89 a year) |
Ultra at $16.99 a month costs $7 more than monthly Plus. The value case rests on the 2,000 Mochi (which SimilarLabs lists as worth $20) and the flagship models. If you would not spend that currency on moments or images anyway, Plus is the better buy. As SimilarLabs puts it, subscription value depends on how much you use the app each day.
Performance and independent testing
We found no rigorous, independent benchmark of Emochi's chat quality, which is normal for companion apps. What exists is reviewer analysis and user feedback, so treat this section as a summary of reported behaviour, not lab results.
SimilarLabs credits Emochi with a large, roleplay-focused library, solid custom creation, a free tier good enough to evaluate the product, and web plus mobile access. On the negative side, it reports that reviewers mention ads, crashes and loading bugs, and that bots sometimes "speak for the user" or lose context in longer chats. Those two failure modes are the most common complaints across character apps, and they matter more here because Emochi's users spend long sessions in a single story.
App-store ratings are strong. SimilarLabs reports 4.6 stars on Google Play with 10M+ downloads, and a 4.6/5 average on iOS from about 49,300 ratings, as of July 2026. AIChief gives Emochi an editorial 4.3/5, with its weakest sub-score on features (78%) (AIChief). We could not load the live store rating pages ourselves, so take those numbers as reported.
Where it breaks
- Long-context drift. As a story runs past a few hundred messages, characters can forget earlier facts or contradict their persona. Paid memory controls help but do not remove this; it is a limit of how chat models handle long histories.
- Bots writing your lines. Reported by SimilarLabs. A tighter character definition and custom instructions (Plus and up) are the usual fix.
- Inconsistent content rules. The App Store rates Emochi 17+, citing mature or suggestive themes, "sexual content and nudity" and profanity (App Store), while SimilarLabs reports a 14+ rating on Google Play. FlashGet Kids says newer updates removed explicit adult options and that moderation blocks outright adult roleplay. In practice, expect romantic and suggestive content, with filters that are not perfectly predictable.
- Factual questions. Characters are tuned to stay in role, not to be accurate. For real answers, use one of the best AI tools for asking questions instead.
Privacy and safety
Per the Google Play data-safety section cited by SimilarLabs, Emochi may share device IDs and may collect personal info, app activity and performance data; data is encrypted in transit and you can request deletion. SimilarLabs advises against treating chats as private, and FlashGet recommends using the app "for entertainment only, not for secret or professional communication" (FlashGet Kids). That is sound advice for any companion app. Reported usage of 150 minutes a day is also a reason to keep an eye on how much time you, or a teenager in your house, spend in it.
Who it's for
| If you want... | Emochi fit |
|---|---|
| Anime or fandom roleplay with lots of ready-made characters | Good |
| To build and share your own characters | Good |
| Voice and images in most messages, for free | Poor (small daily quotas) |
| Research, homework, coding or factual answers | Poor |
| A safe space for under-17s | Poor (17+ on iOS) |
| Strong privacy guarantees | Poor |
Emochi AI alternatives worth considering
AlternativeTo lists Character.AI, SillyTavern, Butterflies, SocialAI and Janitor as Emochi alternatives. Three worth a look:
- Character.AI. The closest match: a huge user-made character library on web, Android and iPhone, with a freemium model. Read our Character AI review, which also covers its teen rules.
- SillyTavern. A free, self-hosted front end for roleplay. You connect your own model or API, so you trade convenience for control over models, memory and data.
- Butterflies. Listed as free on AlternativeTo, and built more like a social feed of AI characters than a one-on-one chat app.

Verdict: who should use it and who should skip it
Emochi AI does one job, and the numbers say a lot of people like how it does it: 10M+ Android installs, top download rankings and company-reported revenue of about $45 million a year. The character library is big, creation tools are flexible, and Plus at an effective $8.33 a month on the yearly plan is fair if you chat daily.
The limits are just as clear. The free tier meters voice and images to a taste, long stories drift, content rules differ between stores, and privacy protections are basic. Use it if you are an adult who wants anime-style roleplay and treats it as entertainment. Skip it if you need accuracy, privacy, or a platform suitable for younger teens. Our scores: features 7.5, ease of use 8, value 7, performance 6.5, for 3.5 out of 5 overall.
