Visit Scribbr AI Detector

The Scribbr AI detector is a free AI checker from the academic editing company Scribbr. It scans up to 1,200 words per submission, with no sign-up and no cap on the number of checks, according to Scribbr's AI Detector page. It is quick and easy to use, but independent tests put its accuracy in the middle of the pack, and it should not be treated as proof that anyone used AI.

That matters because Scribbr says its tools are "used by millions of users every month." A free score that looks precise can still be wrong. This review covers what Scribbr AI does, what it costs and how it performed in published tests.

No one at The AI Future ran hands-on tests for this piece. The review is based on Scribbr's official pages, independent and competitor tests, a YouTube review and user ratings, all checked in late October 2026. Where someone else did the testing, the source is named.

What is Scribbr AI?

Scribbr is an academic services company best known for proofreading, citation generators and a paid plagiarism checker. Its AI Detector is a free web tool that estimates how likely a text is to be AI-generated. If you searched for "scriber ai", "ai detector scribbr" or "scribbr ai checker", this is the tool.

Scribbr's detector is not fully home-grown technology. GPTZero describes it as a “wrap-around” for Quillbot’s AI detection service, and a review by Fast.io says it runs on QuillBot's detection engine. Scribbr's own page links to QuillBot's AI Detector as a more advanced option.

The tool gives a percentage score from 0 to 100% and labels text as fully AI-generated, AI-refined or human-written, Scribbr says. It does not check for plagiarism and does not offer editing suggestions. For background on how these scores are produced, see our explainer on how AI detectors work.

Key features

Free checks with a 1,200-word limit

The free version allows "an unlimited number of AI checks for free, with a limit of up to 1,200 words per submission," according to Scribbr. No account is required. Longer papers must be split into chunks. One older Scribbr article still lists a 500-word free limit, so the live tool page is the figure to trust.

Sentence and section highlighting

Scribbr says its checker "identifies specific areas in your text that are likely AI-generated or AI-refined." This makes it a usable free ai scanner for spotting which paragraphs trigger a flag. Quetext, a competitor, says the reports give little explanation of flagged text beyond the score.

AI-refined detection

Beyond a simple AI or human verdict, Scribbr flags text that was written by a person and then polished with AI. That category matters for students who use grammar or paraphrasing tools. Independent results on mixed and paraphrased text are weaker, as the testing section shows.

Language support

The AI Detector page says the tool analyses English, Spanish, German and French. Scribbr's plagiarism checker page lists Dutch as well. English is the best-tested language in the published studies.

Model coverage

Scribbr's own wording is cautious. Its page says the free detector "can detect texts written using GPT2, GPT3, and GPT3.5 with average accuracy," while the premium detector adds GPT-4. The page also names ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini. It does not publish results for the newest 2026 models.

Privacy

Scribbr states: "Rest easy knowing your submissions remain private; we do not store or share your data." For the paid plagiarism check, it says submissions will never be added to our content database.

Scribbr AI pricing and plans

Scribbr does not sell the AI detector as a subscription. The free tool is the main product. The premium AI check comes bundled with Scribbr's paid plagiarism check, which is priced per document. Prices below were checked October 2026 on Scribbr's plagiarism checker page.

OptionPriceWhat you get
Free AI Detector$0Unlimited checks, up to 1,200 words each, no account
Plagiarism check, small document (up to 7,499 words)$19.95 per checkPlagiarism report plus premium AI writing percentage
Plagiarism check, regular document (7,500 to 49,999 words)$29.95 per checkSame, for longer papers
Plagiarism check, large document (50,000+ words)$39.95 per checkSame, for theses and dissertations

Scribbr notes that "Prices are per check, not a subscription." Its own detector roundup says the premium AI check, included with the plagiarism check, has no word limit. Scribbr customers also get an ad-free experience on the free tool.

What the free plan really includes

The free plan gives you a score, highlighted passages and the AI-generated, AI-refined or human label. It does not include plagiarism checking, an API or batch uploads, according to Fast.io's review. If you only want a quick "did AI write this?" signal on an essay draft, the free tier covers it.

Performance and independent testing

Accuracy is where opinions split. AI detection is contested, and false positives happen with every tool. Scribbr itself says that "no AI model on the market can guarantee 100% accuracy, including ours." Our guide to AI detector accuracy covers why.

Scribbr's own test

Scribbr tested 12 detectors on 30 texts, including human writing, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, human-AI mixes and paraphrased text, each 1,000 to 1,500 characters long, according to its best AI detectors article. It scored its premium detector at 84% with zero false positives, and its free detector and QuillBot's free tool at 78%. Originality.ai scored 76% and GPTZero 52% in the same test.

Scribbr wrote that its "premium AI Detector stood out as the best tool we tested in terms of accuracy." These are a vendor's results on its own product, using a small sample and older models. Treat them as a claim, not an independent verdict.

Third-party benchmarks

Results from outside Scribbr are less flattering. Fast.io reports that Axis Intelligence, testing 600 samples in January 2026, measured a 72.8% detection rate, 82.7% overall accuracy and a 9.2% false positive rate for Scribbr. Roughly one human text in eleven was wrongly flagged in that test.

Fast.io also cites a Pangram Labs comparison in which Scribbr caught 4 of 9 AI samples, against 7 of 9 for GPTZero and Originality.ai. In that small test, Scribbr caught all three Gemini 2.0 samples, one of three GPT-4o samples and none of three Claude 3.7 Sonnet samples. It produced no false positives on human text. Pangram sells its own detector, and the samples were tiny.

GPTZero, another competitor, points to a ZDNet test in which Scribbr and QuillBot identified about 80% of texts correctly but misidentified the author's human text as potential AI. GPTZero concludes it "may be good enough for basic screening, but not necessarily the most precise solution available."

Paraphrased and edited text

Every source agrees on one weakness. Scribbr's free tool caught 50% of mixed or paraphrased texts in its maker's own test. In a YouTube test, Artturi Jalli found Scribbr handled plain human and AI samples but failed once the AI text was rephrased. Quetext adds that it may flag formal human writing as AI, a known risk for non-native English writers.

Our take: Scribbr is a reasonable free first check for an essay. Its results vary sharply by model and by how much a text has been edited. A single score should never be the basis for an accusation of misconduct.

Who it's for

Students who want to check whether their own paper sounds like AI before submitting it. The free ai detector for essays needs no account and handles most short assignments in one pass.

Writers and editors who want a quick second opinion on a draft. It is fast and simple, with readable highlights.

Teachers and managers should use it only as one signal among several. If you review staff work, our guide to using an AI detector to audit employee reports sets out a fairer process.

Who should skip it? Anyone who needs batch scanning, an API, detailed reports or evidence-grade results. Institutions usually need a dedicated platform.

Scribbr AI alternatives worth considering

  • QuillBot AI Detector: the closest relative, with the same free 1,200-word limit and the same 78% score in Scribbr's test. QuillBot premium costs $8.33 a month, according to Scribbr's roundup.
  • GPTZero: a dedicated detector with education-focused features and stronger results in Pangram's small test. Read our GPTZero review.
  • Originality.ai: built for publishers and content teams, at $0.01 per 100 words with a $20 minimum, per Scribbr. See our Originality AI review.

For a ranked comparison of more tools, see our list of the best AI detectors. If you use AI to help draft and want the text to read naturally, our AI humanizer roundup covers legitimate editing tools. Many schools and publishers ban submitting AI-written text as your own, so check the rules first.

Verdict: who should use it and who should skip it

Scribbr AI is one of the easiest free AI checkers to use. No account, unlimited scans and 1,200 words per check make it a sensible first stop for students and writers.

Its accuracy is moderate. Independent tests show it misses edited and some newer-model text, and one benchmark measured a false positive rate above 9%. Scribbr's best published numbers come from its own testing.

Use it for a quick self-check. Skip it if you need reliable evidence, bulk scanning or reporting. Pay for the premium check only if you already need Scribbr's plagiarism report.

FAQ

Does my paper sound like AI?

A detector like Scribbr's can flag passages that read as predictable or formulaic, which is a hint, not proof. Generic phrasing, uniform sentence length and vague claims tend to raise scores. Adding your own examples, sources and voice usually reads as more human.

How can you tell if AI wrote something?

There is no certain test. Detectors estimate probability from word patterns, and all of them make mistakes. Signs worth checking include invented sources, missing personal detail and a sudden change in style. Combine any tool result with human judgement and the writer's drafts or notes.

How to check if my essay is AI generated?

Paste up to 1,200 words into Scribbr's free AI Detector and review the score and highlighted sections. Scan longer essays in chunks, since Scribbr recommends longer text over single sentences. For a second opinion, run the same text through another detector and compare.

Is Scribbr a good AI detector?

It is a good free tool for quick checks, but not the most accurate. Scribbr's own test scored its premium tier at 84%, while an independent benchmark reported 82.7% accuracy with a 9.2% false positive rate. It struggles most with paraphrased text.

Is this paper AI generated?

No detector can answer that with certainty. A high score means the text resembles AI output, not that AI wrote it. If a paper is flagged, look at drafts, version history and the writer's explanation before drawing conclusions.
