How to improve brand visibility in AI answer engines: a 2026 playbook

Eight evidence-backed tactics to get your brand cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, from robots.txt to Reddit to measurement.

To improve brand visibility in AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, you need three things: crawlers that can actually reach your pages, content worth quoting, and a brand that other sites already talk about. I'd say most of what gets sold as "AEO hacks" sits on top of those three and probably adds little. Google's own guide to optimizing for generative AI features, published in May 2026, says plainly that optimizing for its AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO".

This playbook walks through eight tactics in the order I'd apply them, each tied to official documentation or published research. Nobody at The AI Future ran hands-on experiments for this piece; we compiled it from vendor docs, independent studies and industry data as of late October 2026. Where the evidence is only correlational, I'll say so.

Key takeaways

  • Access comes first. If OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot are blocked by robots.txt or your CDN, no amount of content work will get you cited.
  • Off-site mentions beat backlinks. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks.
  • Reddit and YouTube are everywhere. Both sit in the top five cited domains on all five major AI surfaces in Peec's 30-million-source analysis.
  • Freshness matters more outside Google. AI assistants cite content that's about 25.7% newer than organic results, with ChatGPT showing the strongest pull toward recent pages.
  • Measure share, not rank. AI answers change from run to run, so track how often you're mentioned across many prompts, not where you "rank" on one.

Citation choices in AI answer engines

An answer engine is a search engine with a writer bolted on. When you ask a question, the system runs one or more searches, pulls a handful of pages, and asks a language model to write an answer grounded in those pages. Google calls this retrieval-augmented generation and adds a step it calls query fan-out: the model generates "a set of concurrent, related queries" to fetch more results, according to its AI optimization guide. A question about weedy lawns might fan out into queries about herbicides, chemical-free removal and prevention.

That gives two layers, each with its own levers:

  • The retrieval layer decides which pages are fetched. It depends on crawling, indexing and classic search relevance. You influence it with technical access and good pages.
  • The model layer decides which brands get named and how. It leans on what the web says about you, in training data and in the retrieved pages. You influence it with mentions, reviews and community presence.

Each engine runs its own retrieval stack and its own crawlers, so access rules differ:

PerplexityPerplexityBotSurfacing and linking sites in Perplexity results (Perplexity)

The playbook: 8 ways to improve brand visibility in AI answer engines

Open the door: crawler access in robots.txt and your CDN

This is the cheapest fix and, I suspect, the one most often missed. OpenAI runs separate agents with separate jobs. Looking at OpenAI's crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", and sites that opt out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". GPTBot is different: it collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models. The two settings are independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot if you want citations without contributing training data. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems.

Perplexity works the same way. Its crawler docs describe PerplexityBot as "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" and say it isn't used to crawl content for foundation models. A second agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a person asks a question and "generally ignores robots.txt rules" because the user triggered it. OpenAI's ChatGPT-User behaves similarly.

Google is the odd one out. There's no separate AI crawler for AI Overviews or AI Mode: robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control, and a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, per Google's AI features documentation.

The Gemini app is a separate case. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that governs training of future Gemini models and grounding in Gemini Apps, and it "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search", according to Google's crawler overview. In an October 30, 2026 post, Google added that sites which explicitly allow Google-Extended "are eligible to appear in responses and receive clicks via grounding in Gemini Apps". Block it, and you trade Gemini app citations for keeping your content out of training.

A practical robots.txt for a brand that wants citations but not training looks like this:

  • User-agent: OAI-SearchBot; then Allow: /
  • User-agent: PerplexityBot; then Allow: /
  • User-agent: Googlebot; then Allow: /
  • User-agent: GPTBot; then Disallow: / (optional, training only)
  • User-agent: Google-Extended; then decide deliberately, since blocking also removes Gemini app grounding

Then check the layer below robots.txt. In July 2025 Cloudflare changed its default "to block AI crawlers unless they pay creators for their content", and PC Gamer reported that users can switch that default off. Both OpenAI and Perplexity publish IP ranges and recommend allowing them; Perplexity's docs include step-by-step WAF rules for Cloudflare and AWS. If your server logs show no OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot requests at all, look at your firewall before you look at your content.

One more Google-specific item: its 2026 guide notes that a site "must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console" to be eligible for those features. Check that setting while you're in Search Console; it takes a minute.

Structure pages so a model can lift a clean answer

The best-known evidence here is the GEO paper, first published on arXiv in 2023, which built a benchmark of queries and tested rewrites on source pages. Its abstract reports that optimization "can boost visibility by up to 40%" in generative engine responses. The top methods were adding citations to credible sources, adding relevant quotations and adding statistics, which the paper says achieved a 30–40% relative improvement on its main visibility metric. Classic keyword stuffing offered "little to no improvement". The effect also varied by domain: statistics helped most for law, government and opinion queries, quotations for history and explanation.

Google's guidance points the same way, with a warning against overdoing it. Its guide says you don't need to "chunk" content into tiny pieces or rewrite pages "just for AI systems", and that "there's no ideal page length". What it does recommend is ordinary good structure: paragraphs, sections and "headings that provide a clear structure to navigate content".

In practice that means:

  • Answer first. Put a direct, two or three sentence answer under each question-style heading.
  • Use numbers with units and sources. "Setup takes 15 minutes on a 50-seat account" is quotable; "setup is quick" isn't.
  • Cite and quote. Link to the study or document behind each claim, as the GEO results suggest.
  • Use tables for comparisons. Specs, prices and plan limits are easier to extract from a table than from prose.
  • Keep key facts in HTML text. Google lists "making sure that important content is available in textual form" as a best practice; facts locked in images or PDFs are harder to use.

Publish non-commodity content that only you can write

Fan-out retrieval pulls many pages on the same topic, so a page that repeats what everyone else says has little reason to be chosen. Google's guide draws the line between "commodity" content such as "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers" and non-commodity content that offers "unique expert or experienced takes". It also warns that spinning up a page for every fan-out query "violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy".

For a brand, the strongest non-commodity assets are usually things you already have: anonymised product usage data, benchmark results, pricing breakdowns, customer case studies with real numbers, and clear documentation. These are also the pages journalists and reviewers link to, which feeds tactic 4.

Earn third-party mentions and reviews

The model layer forms a view of your brand from what other sites say. Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands against millions of AI Overview responses and found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility (0.664 on the Spearman scale), followed by branded anchors (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392). Backlinks came in at just 0.218. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions earned up to 10 times more AI Overview mentions than the next quartile, and 26% of brands studied had zero mentions. Ahrefs is careful to note that "correlation ≠ causation".

Which sites matter depends on the engine. Peec's analysis of 30 million sources (March 2026, US) found ChatGPT leans on editorial sites such as Forbes and TechRadar, Google's AI surfaces favour social platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Yelp, and G2 appears in the top five only for Perplexity. For B2B software, that makes review platforms worth real attention.

There's a limit. Google's guide lists "seeking inauthentic 'mentions'" among the tactics you can ignore, noting that its AI features rely on core ranking systems and spam systems. Paid placements dressed up as editorial, fake reviews and link farms are a risk to the brand, not a shortcut. The durable route is digital PR with real news, original data that reporters cite, and a steady process for asking happy customers to leave reviews.

Show up on Reddit, YouTube and forums, honestly

Reddit and YouTube appear in the top five cited domains for Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT in Peec's data, the only two sources that do. Semrush's study of 230,000 prompts also found Reddit among the top five cited domains on ChatGPT, AI Mode and Perplexity.

The same Semrush study shows why I wouldn't bet everything on one platform, and the numbers are a bit startling. ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August 2025, then dropped to about 10% by mid-September. Semrush's Sergei Rogulin suggested the change was "an attempt to avoid over-citing on certain websites". Visibility that depends on one domain can disappear overnight, which is the part I'd worry about.

Reddit's own platform rules ask users to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest" and not to spam or engage in "content manipulation". So the playbook here is plain, and I think it's the only version that lasts: have named staff answer questions in relevant subreddits, disclose who they work for, and contribute where you have real expertise. On YouTube, publish product walkthroughs and comparisons with accurate titles and descriptions, since those transcripts and metadata are what gets retrieved.

Use structured data and keep entity facts consistent

Structured data helps machines read your page, but it isn't a secret AI switch. Google's guide says it "isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add", while recommending you keep using it for rich results. Its 2025 Search Central post adds one firm rule: make sure all the content in your markup is also visible on the page.

The bigger win is consistency. If your pricing page, your G2 listing, your Google Business Profile and your Merchant Center feed disagree, the model has to pick one. Google explicitly lists keeping "Merchant Center and Business Profile information" up to date as a best practice for AI features. Use Organization, Product and FAQ markup where it fits, and audit your key facts (name, prices, locations, founding date, leadership) across every profile you control.

What about llms.txt? Google's guide says you don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown" to appear in Google Search "as Google Search itself doesn't use them". Other engines haven't committed to using it either, so I'd treat it as optional at best.

Keep content fresh, especially for ChatGPT

Ahrefs analysed 17 million citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and organic Google results. Cited URLs in AI assistants averaged 1,064 days since publication, compared with 1,432 days for organic results, which Ahrefs calls 25.7% "fresher". ChatGPT showed the strongest preference for newer pages, and both ChatGPT and Perplexity appeared to order their in-text references from newest to oldest. Google's AI Overviews were the exception, citing content about as old as the organic results.

The practical response is probably a refresh calendar, not a date-stamp trick. Update your highest-value pages (pricing, comparisons, "best of" and how-to pages) when facts change, show a visible "last updated" date, and add genuinely new information such as current prices or recent data. Changing a date without changing the content gives the reader nothing.

Measure results with the right metrics

Measurement has three layers, from free to paid.

Google's own data. AI Overview and AI Mode appearances count in the Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type, per Google's documentation. In June 2026 Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports showing impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI features in Search and Discover. Google said it's rolling them out to a subset of sites first, so you may not see them yet.

Referral traffic. ChatGPT appends UTM tags to outbound links. PPC Land reported in June 2025 that ChatGPT extended utm_source=chatgpt tagging to links in its "More" section, which previously showed up as direct traffic. Build a GA4 channel group that catches chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com referrers, and judge them on conversions, not just clicks. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality", with visitors more likely to spend time on the site.

Prompt tracking. To see whether you're named when no click happens, you need to run prompts at scale. Be careful how you read the data. SparkToro research with 600 volunteers running 12 prompts nearly 3,000 times found there's "a <1 in 100 chance" that ChatGPT or Google's AI will give the same list of brands in any two of 100 responses. Track mention rate and share of voice across many prompts and runs; ignore day-to-day "rank" changes.

A worked example: how much tracking data you need

Say you track 50 prompts across three engines once a day. That's 50 × 3 × 30 = 4,500 answers a month, which matches the allowance on Peec AI's $95/month Starter plan.

Now take one engine at weekly granularity: 50 prompts × 7 days = 350 answers. Suppose your brand appears in 42 of them, a 12% mention rate. The 95% margin of error on a proportion is about 1.96 × √(0.12 × 0.88 / 350), or roughly ±3.4 percentage points. So a move from 12% to 14% next week is noise. A move from 12% to 18% held for three or four weeks is probably real.

Two rules fall out of this. First, decide on a minimum sample before you report changes to anyone. Second, if you only track 10 prompts weekly (70 answers), your margin of error is around ±7.6 points, which makes most short-term changes impossible to read.

The limits

  • Correlation isn't causation. The Ahrefs mention study and most "citation factor" research is correlational. Big brands get mentioned more and get cited more; that doesn't prove one causes the other.
  • Platforms change sources without notice. The ChatGPT Reddit drop from about 60% to about 10% of responses in a few weeks is the clearest example.
  • User-triggered fetchers ignore robots.txt. ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User may still visit pages you have blocked, so robots.txt isn't a full privacy control.
  • Blocking has side effects. Disallowing Google-Extended to protect training data also removes Gemini app grounding; a blanket CDN block can remove you from ChatGPT and Perplexity search.
  • Attribution is partial. Many AI answers name your brand without a click. Analytics will undercount the effect, and Search Console's AI report is still rolling out.
  • Small brands start from zero. If almost nobody writes about you, content and technical fixes will help retrieval but not the model's willingness to recommend you. Mentions likely take months to build.

Tools that help (briefly)

You can do tactics 1 to 7 with a text editor, Search Console and GA4. A tracking tool becomes useful once you need prompt-level data across engines. Honestly, I think most small brands should skip the paid tools until tactics 1 to 7 are done. A few starting points, with prices as checked in October 2026:

  • Peec AI: from $95/month for 4,500 AI answers a month across three models.
  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: $99/month, a natural fit if your team already lives in Semrush.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar: every paid Ahrefs plan includes a small daily custom-prompt quota, with larger packages available, per Ahrefs.

FAQ

How long does it take to improve brand visibility in AI answer engines?

Technical fixes can show up fast: OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes reach their search systems in about 24 hours. Content changes depend on recrawling, which Google says can take days to months. Off-site mentions and reviews are the slowest lever, so plan in quarters, and measure with a large enough prompt sample to see real change.

Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?

You can block GPTBot without losing ChatGPT search citations. Per OpenAI's documentation, GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are independent: GPTBot governs training, while OAI-SearchBot governs whether you appear in ChatGPT search answers. Keep OAI-SearchBot allowed if you want to be cited, and check your CDN too, since a firewall rule can undo the robots.txt setting. Google-Extended is different, because blocking it also removes Gemini app grounding. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much you value Gemini citations.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI search?

Not for Google. Its 2026 guide says Google Search doesn't use llms.txt or other AI-specific files, and there's no special schema.org markup for AI features. Standard structured data is still worth using for rich results, as long as it matches the visible page. Other engines haven't committed to llms.txt, so treat it as optional.

Is Reddit marketing worth it for AI visibility?

Reddit is one of the most-cited domains across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features, so a genuine presence helps. But Reddit's rules ban spam and content manipulation, and ChatGPT cut its Reddit citations sharply in 2025. Participate openly as a brand employee, answer real questions, and spread effort across YouTube, review sites and press too.

What is the best metric for AI visibility?

Mention rate, the share of relevant AI answers that name your brand, is probably the most useful single metric. Pair it with share of voice against competitors and referral conversions from GA4. Avoid tracking "rank" in AI answers: SparkToro found the same prompt almost never returns the same brand list twice, so positions are too unstable to read.
