C AI alternatives with voice: 6 best voice chat apps in 2026

Character AI's voice calls face an uncertain future. Six safe-for-work C AI alternatives with voice, from ChatGPT to Sesame, compared on price and age rules.

Collage of the official websites of ChatGPT, Gemini, Sesame, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Claude

Character AI's voice calls still work, but the company behind them filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, and users under 18 can no longer chat freely. The best c ai alternatives with voice are ChatGPT for the most natural all-round voice chat, Gemini Live for free hands-free talk, and Sesame for voice characters with distinct personalities. Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Claude round out the list. I'd start with ChatGPT unless you're an adult who wants a character-style companion.

That matters, because voice is probably one of Character AI's most-used extras. Its Character Calls feature lets you talk to a character like a phone call, with tap-to-interrupt, according to AI Companion Pick. No mainstream rival copies that exactly, and I doubt one will soon.

This guide compares six safe-for-work voice chat apps using official help pages, App Store listings and independent reporting, as of late October 2026. Nobody at The AI Future ran hands-on tests for it. Apps that market adult roleplay, "unfiltered" chat or AI girlfriends and boyfriends were excluded. For text-first options, see our broader Character AI alternatives guide.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT has the most complete voice mode. Its new Live option can listen and speak at the same time, and free users get limited access.
  • Gemini Live is the strongest free pick on Android. It's included on Google's free plan and rated 13+ on the App Store.
  • Sesame is the closest thing to a voice character. It offers four named voice agents with memory, but it is rated 18+.
  • Age rules differ sharply. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI are rated 13+; Claude and Sesame are rated 18+.
  • None of these apps has a Character AI-style library of user-made voice characters, so you trade variety for stability and safety.

Reasons to leave Character AI

Uncertainty comes first. Character Technologies is in a court-supervised sale expected to close in late November or early December, RoboRhythms reports. If no buyer keeps the platform going, the company says it will wind it down. That seems a real risk for anyone with chats they care about.

Age is the second. Character AI ended open-ended chat for users under 18 on November 25, 2025, according to Tech Insider. Teens now get a guided Stories mode instead, so voice calls with characters are effectively an adults-only feature.

Limits are the third. Free voice calls may be throttled, and the c.ai+ plan at $9.99 a month removes the cap, as detailed in our Character AI review. The free tier also carries ads now.

Users are asking directly. A thread titled "Is There An App That Does Voice Calls Like Character AI?" appeared on the r/CharacterAI subreddit in late October.

Before you switch, export your data. Exports from Character AI can take three to four weeks, and the link expires after seven days, per RoboRhythms. Our guide on deleting a Character AI account covers the steps if you want to leave for good.

Our ranking method

Nobody at The AI Future tested these apps hands-on. We compared them on six criteria, using vendor help pages, App Store listings and independent reports published in 2025 and 2026:

  • Voice quality and flow: real-time, interruptible conversation versus turn-by-turn speech.
  • Character feel: distinct personalities, named voices and memory across sessions.
  • Free access: how much voice chat you get for $0.
  • Price: the cheapest paid plan that adds voice usage.
  • Age rating and teen safety: App Store rating, teen modes and parental controls.
  • Stability: backing from a large company or a well-funded startup.

Prices are in U.S. dollars and can vary by country and app store.

The best C AI alternatives with voice in 2026, ranked

ChatGPT – best for natural real-time voice chat

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant, with a built-in voice mode you can switch on from any chat. You can give it a character brief and talk to it out loud (chatgpt.com).

ChatGPT homepage
Image: ChatGPT, chatgpt.com (official website)

Strengths

ChatGPT now offers three voice options. Live "can listen and speak at the same time, making turn-taking and interruptions feel more natural," according to OpenAI's help center. Advanced is the previous real-time mode, and Standard transcribes your speech first. The latest App Store update added 12 new voices with improved accents.

It's also the clearest option for families. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens for ages 13 to 17 on August 18, 2026, and teen accounts get reduced sexual or romantic roleplay, Notebookcheck reports. Parents of linked teen accounts can manage access to Voice through parental controls, per OpenAI. Honestly, I think it's the most polished voice experience here, even without a character library.

Key features

  • Live voice, powered by GPT-Live-1.1, with web search and memory
  • Three voice modes: Live, Advanced and Standard
  • Video and screen sharing in Advanced mode on mobile
  • Teen experience for ages 13 to 17, with parental control over Voice
  • Rolling limits: Go and Plus users get 3 hours of Live voice per 24 hours

Pros

  • Natural, interruptible conversation
  • Clear teen rules and parental controls
  • Free plan includes some Live access

Cons

  • No public library of voice characters
  • Free Live usage is limited and may change
  • Live mode doesn't support video or screen sharing

ChatGPT pricing: Free, then Go about $8/month; Plus $20/month; Pro $100 or $200/month, per CometAPI (checked October 2026). See pricing

Gemini – best for free hands-free voice on Android

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Its Gemini Live mode lets you hold a free-flowing voice conversation and interrupt it at any time (gemini.google.com).

Gemini official preview image
Image: Gemini, gemini.google.com (official website)

Strengths

Gemini Live is part of Google's free plan, according to the Gemini subscriptions page. You can start it by saying "Hey Google, let's talk Live," and stream video or share your screen during a chat, per Google's help page. Google says Live can remember key details across sessions, such as hobbies or family dates, on its Gemini Live overview.

The catch for roleplay fans: Google's help page says "Gems can't be used with Gemini Live," so custom personas stay in text, which I'd call a real letdown for roleplay. The app is rated 13+ on the U.S. App Store.

Key features

  • Free Gemini Live on the no-cost plan
  • Interruptible voice with hold, mute and resume controls
  • Camera and screen sharing during a Live chat
  • Cross-session memory of details you mention
  • Transcripts when you end a Live chat

Pros

  • Generous free voice access
  • Deep links to Gmail, Calendar and other Google apps
  • 13+ rating suits older teens

Cons

  • Custom Gems don't work in Live
  • No named voice characters
  • Built for help, not roleplay

Gemini pricing: Free (includes Gemini Live); then Google AI Plus and Pro plans raise usage limits; Ultra costs $199.99/month (checked October 2026). See pricing

Sesame – best for voice characters with memory

Sesame is a voice-first app from the Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe's startup. You talk to one of four AI agents, each with its own personality and memory (sesame.com).

Sesame official preview image
Image: Sesame, sesame.com (official website)

Strengths

Sesame is the nearest mainstream match to a Character AI voice call, as far as I can tell. Its agents, Maya, Miles, Simone and Charlie, have "a distinct personality, a point of view, and memory that grows over time," according to its App Store listing. The app launched in 39 countries backed by a $250 million Series B led by Sequoia, and all four agents were free at launch, AI Weekly reports.

It markets itself as a thinking partner, not a romance app. The listing promises no ads and an Incognito mode that saves nothing. It's rated 18+ and iPhone-only. Our upcoming Sesame AI review will cover it in more depth.

Key features

  • Four voice agents: Maya, Miles, Simone and Charlie
  • Continuous memory across voice and text
  • Agent tools: web search, notes, reminders and summaries
  • Incognito mode: nothing saved to memory or Sesame's servers
  • Texting fallback when you can't speak aloud

Pros

  • Distinct, named voice personalities
  • Free, with no ads
  • Strong funding behind it

Cons

  • Rated 18+
  • iPhone only, English only
  • No custom characters; you pick from four

Sesame pricing: Free on the App Store; no paid plan was listed (checked October 2026). See it on the App Store

Microsoft Copilot – best for voice chat for Windows users

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's consumer AI assistant, with a voice mode called Copilot Voice (copilot.microsoft.com).

Microsoft Copilot official preview image
Image: Microsoft Copilot, copilot.microsoft.com (official website)

Strengths

Copilot's app and website are free with a Microsoft account, and paid voice usage comes with Microsoft 365, Dupple reports. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month and lists "higher usage than free" for AI audio, the same report says.

Copilot is losing its most character-like feature, which seems an odd move. Microsoft is retiring Mico, the animated face of Copilot Voice, less than a year after its October 2025 debut and moving it to its Learn Live tutoring tool, Notebookcheck Italy reports. On safety, Copilot requires users to be at least 13 and doesn't train models on young people's data, per Microsoft Support.

Key features

  • Copilot Voice for spoken conversations
  • Free app with a Microsoft account
  • Microsoft 365 bundle: more audio usage on paid plans
  • Teen protections: no model training on young users' data

Pros

  • Free to start
  • Built into Windows and Office
  • Clear minimum age of 13

Cons

  • Mico avatar leaving Copilot Voice
  • No custom voice characters
  • Paid plans bundled with Office, not sold for voice alone

Microsoft Copilot pricing: Free, then Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/month; Premium $19.99/month, per Dupple (checked October 2026). See plans

Meta AI – best for voice chat across Meta apps

Meta AI is Meta's assistant, available as a standalone app and inside Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. You can talk to it by voice in 13 languages (meta.ai).

Meta AI homepage
Image: Meta AI, meta.ai (official website)

Strengths

Meta AI is free and probably already on your phone. Its App Store listing says "voice conversations are faster and more natural, with support for 13 languages." The app is rated 13+.

Its teen record needs care. In January 2026, Meta began "temporarily pausing teens' access to existing AI characters globally," after reports that some character bots had sexual conversations with minors, Engadget reported. Teens can still use the main Meta AI assistant, which Meta says has age-appropriate protections. Meta also announced parental controls in October 2025, including an option to block one-on-one chats with AI characters, per ABC7 and the Associated Press. I'd stick to the main assistant, and I'd check teen settings first.

Key features

  • Voice chat in 13 languages
  • Live AI gives real-time answers about what your camera sees
  • Works across Meta apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp
  • Teen limits: AI characters paused for teen accounts

Pros

  • Free, with no separate subscription
  • Available inside apps you may already use
  • Wide language support

Cons

  • Past safety failures with teen character chats
  • AI characters unavailable to teens
  • Heavy ties to Meta's social apps and data

Meta AI pricing: Free; no paid plan was listed on its App Store page (checked October 2026). See it on the App Store

Claude – best for voice storytelling for adults

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, known for long, coherent writing. Its voice mode lets you run a story or talk through ideas out loud (claude.ai).

Claude homepage
Image: Claude, claude.ai (official website)

Strengths

Claude probably suits people who used Character AI to co-write fiction. Voice mode is a beta feature on all plans, including Free, on mobile, desktop and the web, according to Anthropic's help center. It offers a hands-free mode and a push-to-talk mode for noisy places, plus several voices.

Voice chats count toward your normal usage limits, the help page notes. The app is rated 18+ on the U.S. App Store, so it isn't a teen option. If you want to know how it handles long-form writing, which is where I think it's strongest, our Claude review covers that in detail.

Key features

  • Voice mode on every plan, in beta
  • Hands-free and push-to-talk modes
  • Several voices to choose from
  • Connected tools such as web search and Google Calendar during voice chats

Pros

  • Strong long-form storytelling
  • Voice available on the free plan
  • Works on web, desktop and mobile

Cons

  • Rated 18+
  • Voice is still in beta
  • Voice use eats into regular limits

Claude pricing: Free, then Pro $20/month or $17/month billed annually; Max $100 or $200/month, per BenchLM (checked October 2026). See pricing

Choosing an alternative

Pick by how you want to talk

ChatGPT's Live voice is the pick for the most natural back-and-forth. Want free, hands-free chat on Android? Gemini Live. Sesame is the one for a named voice character that remembers you, and it's my favourite of the three for sheer personality.

Pick by age

Teens aged 13 to 17 should use ChatGPT's teen experience, Gemini or Copilot. Claude and Sesame are rated 18+. On Meta AI, teens can use the assistant but not AI characters.

Pick by budget

Gemini, Sesame and Meta AI cost nothing for voice. ChatGPT Go, at about $8 a month, buys 3 hours of Live voice per day. That is close to the $9.99 c.ai+ plan.

Recreate your favourite character

No app imports Character AI characters. Copy each character's description into a text file before you leave, then paste it into a ChatGPT or Claude chat and switch on voice. If you want a custom voice for your own projects, our AI voice generator roundup covers dedicated tools.

Apps we left out

Several apps often named as Character AI alternatives with voice didn't make the cut. Nomi, Kindroid and Replika offer voice calls, but they are adult-focused companion apps; our sister guide covers their age ratings and content policies. Janitor AI and SpicyChat are known for NSFW-friendly policies, per AIera.

Pi, from Inflection AI, has six natural voices and a gentle, supportive style. But it's largely in maintenance mode, and its app store availability is unclear, according to MessengerBot.

Verdict

No mainstream app recreates Character AI's library of voice characters.

The safer, more stable options give up variety for polish, and I think that's a fair trade for most people.

ChatGPT is probably the best Character AI alternative with voice for most people, thanks to its Live mode and teen controls. Gemini Live is the best free choice. Sesame is the pick for adults who want a voice companion with personality.

The Character AI sale is expected to close in late November or early December. Export your chats now, and I'd avoid annual plans until the dust settles.
