Gemini AI vs ChatGPT is a near tie on quality in late October 2026, so the better pick depends on what you already use. Google's Gemini wins on long documents, Google Workspace integration and value at the $20 tier. OpenAI's ChatGPT wins on free use, a cheaper $8 entry plan and the broader set of everyday tools. I'd lean towards Gemini if you're already in Google's apps, but it's close.

Both assistants changed models this month. OpenAI moved paying ChatGPT users to GPT-6 Sol on October 7, according to its release notes. Google put Gemini 4 Argon into the Gemini app for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on October 13, its release notes show.

The AI Future didn't run its own hands-on test for this comparison. The findings below draw on official plan pages and release notes, independent benchmarks, published side-by-side tests and user discussions, as of late October 2026. Where someone else ran a test, they're named.

Quick verdict: who wins for which use case

  • Long documents and research: Gemini. Google AI Pro offers a 1M-token context window in the app, against 54K on ChatGPT Plus (256K in reasoning mode), per Atlas Cloud.
  • Free, everyday chat: ChatGPT. Free and Go users get "unlimited everyday text chats," OpenAI says. Gemini's free plan runs on a Flash-Lite model.
  • Google users: Gemini. It works inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, and AI Pro includes 5 TB of storage, per Google One.
  • Coding on a budget: ChatGPT. "Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go," OpenAI says, as quoted by Atlas Cloud. Google names only Ultra for Argon in its Antigravity agent, Izzedo notes.
  • Accuracy on facts: Gemini, narrowly. Argon hallucinated far less than GPT-6 models in one independent test, though it also answered fewer questions correctly.

Our take: on the same prompts, the two flagships now produce work of similar quality. Pick Gemini if you live in Google's apps or handle large files. Pick ChatGPT if you won't pay, or want the widest range of features in one app. Honestly, for most people the app they already open daily probably decides it.

Features compared

Models

ChatGPT's line-up is set by plan. "Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna," OpenAI wrote on October 7. The Pro reasoning option "continues to use GPT-6 Astra," the same release note says.

Gemini lets paying users choose. Argon is Google's "newest frontier model, built to take your most complex tasks from start to finish," according to the Gemini release notes. AI Pro also includes Gemini 3.1 Pro and the Flash models. Free users get a Flash-Lite model, and AI Plus gets 3.6 Flash, per Google One.

One setting matters. Gemini defaults to a Low thinking level unless you choose another, Izzedo reports, citing Google's help pages. I'd guess hard questions need Medium or High.

Interface and output formats

ChatGPT's headline feature is Intelligent UI. Answers can mix text, visuals and tools "such as calculators, bill splitters, and games," OpenAI says. Users can switch the visual parts off in web settings, Android Headlines notes.

Gemini has moved the same way. Its answers can include zoomable images, timelines and 30 to 60 second narrated video overviews, the release notes say.

Google says Argon "answers questions more directly with less hedging" and "skips clichés," in its app announcement.

Apps, agents and research tools

Gemini now connects to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify, per Google. A Tasks toggle lets it keep working when you're away.

Skills, reusable sets of instructions, will soon replace Gems.

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July. It "remains a standalone product," but now syncs with the Gemini app, Google said. North Carolina State University's IT office reported the change on July 17.

ChatGPT answers with ChatGPT Work for longer jobs, Codex for coding and "dots," always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, per its release notes. Its plugins now include iCloud Mail and Calendar on all plans, which is handy for Apple users.

Privacy defaults

Both train on personal chats by default. Gemini keeps chats for 18 months by default, or 72 hours with Keep Activity off. ChatGPT keeps chats until you delete them, and temporary chats for up to 30 days, Atlas Cloud found in each company's policies.

Quality of output: same prompts, side by side

The most direct recent test comes from Atlas Cloud, which sells API access to both models. In October it gave Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-6 Sol the same three prompts through the API, with scoring rules written in advance. Its write-up summarises the outputs rather than printing them in full. All three rounds ended in ties on quality.

Prompt 1: a coding task

"Write a Python function parse_iso_duration(s) that converts an ISO 8601 duration string into a total number of seconds and returns it as an int."
  • Gemini 4 Argon passed all five test cases, using 316 output tokens.
  • GPT-6 Sol passed all five, using 1,101 output tokens, 789 of them on reasoning. Its single pattern with named groups was "easier to extend," Atlas Cloud said.
  • Result: tie. Both also passed ten extra edge cases.

Prompt 2: a plain-English rewrite with strict rules

"Rewrite the paragraph below in plain English for a customer who is about to return a product. Keep it under 90 words."

The source was a 210-word returns policy with three dates and three numbers to keep.

  • Gemini 4 Argon wrote 118 words. It kept the dates and numbers but dropped "approved" before refunds.
  • GPT-6 Sol wrote 127 words. It kept every condition, but used 9,502 output tokens, most of them reasoning.
  • Result: tie. Both broke the 90-word limit.

Prompt 3: study notes with a planted error

"Below are my lecture notes for a history exam. Do three things, in this order. First, turn the notes into exactly 8 flashcards"

The notes also asked for a three-question quiz and a check for errors. They dated the Sarajevo assassination to 1915 instead of 1914.

  • Gemini 4 Argon used the correct format and flagged the wrong date.
  • GPT-6 Sol used the correct format, flagged the date and linked it to the notes' July Crisis timeline.
  • Result: tie.

"The gap is cost," Atlas Cloud concluded. GPT-6 Sol "used 2.2 to 50 times Argon's output tokens." That matters for API buyers more than for app users on a flat fee, I think.

Benchmarks

At launch, Argon scored 53 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, level with GPT-6 Astra and one point ahead of GPT-6.1 Sol, The Next Web reported. Its hallucination rate on a factual-knowledge test was 15%, against 51% for Astra and 54% for GPT-6.1 Sol. Argon also got fewer answers right: 50%, against 63% for Astra.

Coding is weaker. Argon scored 57% on Terminal Bench 4, behind GPT-6 Astra at 59%. The Next Web added that Bloomberg sources inside Google described its coding as uneven. Google disputed that characterisation.

The headline prices are close: $19.99 against $20. The difference is what comes with them. Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets. ChatGPT Plus has no storage bundle, but Codex and Sites are included.

Google AI Plus launched in the US at $7.99 in January, Android Central reported. It now costs $4.99 but doesn't include Argon. Gemini meters usage over five-hour windows up to a weekly cap, per Izzedo. OpenAI made a change in Pro users' favour on October 29, doubling Work and Codex allowances on Pro 100 and Pro 500, its release notes say.

Reviewer and user reactions

Gemini

One reviewer praises Argon's reasoning but flags its front-end work: Promptslove built five apps with it and scored the model 17 out of 25. Its review summed up the result as "Strong at 3D, weak at layout." On a broken multi-page site, the reviewer said: "This is bad, to be honest, from a company like Google."

Some users prefer Gemini's tone. In an r/Bard thread, one user wrote that Gemini is "quite direct, yet still gentle and doesn't waste word." A reply in the same thread offered the trade-off: "Gemini is more pleasant conversational partner, but GPT know more."

Free users seem less happy. "I think Flash-Lite is pretty bad, so I'm going to switch completely to ChatGPT," one r/Bard user posted in early October.

ChatGPT

Tom's Guide AI editor Amanda Caswell credits GPT-6 with getting to the point. "The brevity of ChatGPT-6 means less fluff, which in my eyes is always a plus," she wrote in September. She picks ChatGPT for structured plans, learning and quick everyday questions.

Some users still find it wordy. The same r/Bard poster said ChatGPT "will write five paragraphs when all I need is a quick two-sentence answer." In r/ChatGPT, one user complained that its pushback makes it "absolutely tone-deaf and insufferable." Others defend it: "Paid chatgpt models are way smarter," a commenter in the r/Bard thread wrote.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Gemini if you use Gmail, Docs and Drive every day, or work with long PDFs, transcripts or codebases. AI Pro at $19.99 is the plan that gets you Argon.
  • Choose ChatGPT if you want the most capable free plan for everyday chat, or one app with Codex, Sites and custom GPTs.
  • On a tight budget, Gemini's $4.99 AI Plus is cheapest, but ChatGPT's $8 Go offers unlimited text chat with higher limits on tools.
  • Developers should compare the tools as well as the models. Codex is on every ChatGPT plan, while Argon in Antigravity is aimed at Ultra subscribers, from $99.99 a month.
  • Heavy users probably keep both, and the free tiers make that easy to try.

Next up: Argon's API price doubles on December 1, when Google's introductory rate ends, according to Izzedo. OpenAI is still rolling out GPT-6.1 Terra in Work and Codex. I'd expect both line-ups to shift again before the end of the year.

FAQ

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?

Not clearly. In Atlas Cloud's three-prompt test, Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-6 Sol tied on quality, though Argon used far fewer tokens. Argon hallucinated less in Artificial Analysis testing.

Is Gemini free like ChatGPT?

Yes. Both have free plans. Gemini's free plan uses a Flash-Lite model with image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live. ChatGPT Free uses GPT-6 Luna with unlimited everyday text chats. Gemini 4 Argon needs Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month or Ultra, so free users don't get Google's top model.

How much do Gemini and ChatGPT cost?

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, AI Pro $19.99 and AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99. ChatGPT Go costs $8, Plus $20, and Pro $100, $200 or $500. All prices are US monthly rates before tax, checked in October 2026. Google's plans also include cloud storage.

Which is better for coding, Gemini or ChatGPT?

It's close. Both passed every case in Atlas Cloud's coding test. Argon trails GPT-6 Astra on Terminal Bench 4, and reviewers flag weak front-end layouts. ChatGPT includes Codex on all plans. Gemini offers Antigravity in its macOS app.

What happened to NotebookLM?

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It remains a standalone research tool and now syncs with the Gemini app, Google says. Paid Google AI plans include higher Gemini Notebook limits. ChatGPT has no direct equivalent, though its projects and deep research cover similar ground.
