Grok vs Claude AI comparison 2026: features, pricing and our verdict
Grok vs Claude in late 2026: Claude leads on reasoning, writing and coding scores; Grok on price, live X data and image and video generation.

Grok and Claude enter November 2026 as two very different assistants. In this Grok vs Claude AI comparison 2026, Claude leads on independent intelligence scores, writing and long agentic work. Grok leads on price per token, real-time X data and built-in image and video generation.
The choice matters because the pricing models no longer line up. Claude sells AI plans from $20 a month. Grok now ships inside The X Subscription, a bundle that starts at $8 and also covers Cursor and X Premium perks.
The AI Future did not run its own hands-on test for this piece. The comparison below draws on official pricing and model pages, published benchmarks, a side-by-side prompt test by Tom's Guide, and user reviews, as of late October 2026. Where someone else ran a test, they are named.
Grok vs Claude AI comparison 2026: quick verdict
- Writing, long documents and careful reasoning: Claude. Its top model, Opus 5.5, scores 58 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index against 46 for Grok 4.7, OrcaRouter reports.
- Breaking news and social trends: Grok. It searches the web and X live, according to SpaceXSI.
- Images and video: Grok. Claude has no native image generator, Dupple notes.
- Cheap entry and bundles: Grok. Its Plus tier costs $8 a month, against $20 for Claude Pro.
- Agentic coding: Claude, on most published scores. Grok 4.7 is far cheaper per token for short, high-volume jobs.
Our take: Claude is the stronger assistant for focused work. Grok is the better value if you want media generation, live X data or Cursor in one bill.

Features compared
Models
The two flagships launched a day apart. SpaceXSI released Grok 4.7 on September 21 and Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, according to OrcaRouter.
SpaceXSI calls Grok 4.7 "our most capable model for coding and knowledge work" in its launch post. It uses a larger base model than Grok 4.6, the company says. Its model docs list a 500,000-token context window and a May 2026 knowledge cutoff.
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 "performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5," in its announcement. Claude's free plan runs Sonnet and Haiku. Opus starts on Pro, and Fable 5.1 needs usage credits on Pro, per the pricing page.
Real-time information
Live data is Grok's clearest edge. The assistant "searches the web and 𝕏 live," SpaceXSI says, with citations and a feed of breaking posts. Claude offers web search on every plan, but no native access to X.
Images, video and voice
Grok generates images and video in the same chat thread. The product page lists images up to 2K resolution and videos up to 15 seconds. Both assistants offer voice mode.
Claude has no native image generation, Dupple reports, citing Claude's own pricing page. Instead, Claude leans on documents: Artifacts, Claude Design, Slides and Docs are available on its free plan, Anthropic says. Our Claude AI review covers those tools in depth.
Coding and agents
Both companies now sell agents, not just chat. Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and the Research tool start on the Pro plan, per Anthropic.
SpaceXSI made its Grok Build coding agent available on every plan in August, its news page shows. Grok Bot, a team of always-on agents, comes with Premium and higher tiers. SpaceX also owns Cursor after acquiring its developer, Anysphere, Trending Topics reports. Notably, the same report says Grok Bot also draws on outside models, including Claude Opus 5.5.
Office integrations
Grok has added add-ins for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, plus a Google Workspace add-on, according to SpaceXSI. Claude offers Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook on paid plans and connectors on every plan.
Quality of output: same prompts, side by side
The AI Future did not run these prompts itself. The most direct published test comes from Tom's Guide, which ran the same five prompts through the free tiers of both assistants in March 2026. Three of those prompts are summarised below, with the reviewer's verdicts.
| Prompt (Tom's Guide) | Grok's answer | Claude's answer | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| "I have $500 to reduce my monthly expenses starting this week..." step-by-step savings plan | A tactical plan with timelines and realistic savings | A streamlined system that prioritised practicality | Claude |
| "Write a short, funny story (under 200 words) about a mom who tries to use AI to get her kids to listen to her" | Chaotic humour with a twist: the kids unionise | A character-driven story with a relatable punchline | Grok |
| "I feel overwhelmed using AI tools..." beginner's 3-step starter system | An ultra-practical system with clear actions and examples | A calm, confidence-building reframe, but more abstract | Grok |

Claude also won the breaking-news and to-do-list prompts, taking the round 3-2 overall. Tom's Guide AI editor Amanda Caswell wrote that "the 'best' AI depends entirely on what you need it to do."
Two caveats apply. The test used free tiers and predates both current flagships. A 2025 Tom's Guide matchup between older models went the other way, with Grok winning, so results shift between model generations.
What benchmarks add
Third-party scores favour Claude on general reasoning. Artificial Analysis rates Opus 5.5 at 58 at maximum effort and Grok 4.7 at 46, OrcaRouter reports.
Coding narrows the picture. Grok 4.7 scored 56 on the same evaluator's Coding Agent Index, up nine points from Grok 4.6. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, SpaceXSI claims 38% for Grok 4.7, while Artificial Analysis measured 33%. Anthropic claims 66.4% for Opus 5.5, and the independent run put it at 59.6%, MyClaw notes. Vendor and independent figures differ on both sides.
Pricing compared
Claude sells standalone AI plans. Grok now comes inside The X Subscription, which launched in mid-October and bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium features, Business Today reports.
| Tier | Grok (The X Subscription) | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0: limited chat and agent requests | $0: limited usage every 5 hours and every week |
| Entry | Plus, $8/month: Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine, Build, Cursor | Pro, $20/month or $17/month billed annually: Opus, Claude Code, Research |
| Mid | Premium, $30/month: 4x Plus usage, Grok Bot, latest models | No equivalent tier |
| High | Super, $100/month: 15x Plus usage, priority access | Max, $100/month: 5x Pro usage, Fable up to half of weekly limit |
| Top | Ultra, $200/month: 50x Plus usage | Ultra, $200/month: 10x Pro weekly usage, no 5-hour limit |
| Teams | $30, $100 or $200 per seat | $25/seat monthly ($20 annual); premium seat $125 ($100 annual) |

Both companies meter usage rather than count messages. Grok and Cursor share one weekly pool, and SpaceXSI publishes it only as multiples of Plus, GoSearch notes. Claude uses a five-hour limit plus a weekly cap. Annual billing drops Grok Premium to $300 a year, GoSearch adds.
API pricing
For developers, Grok 4.7 costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, per SpaceXSI. Claude Opus 5.5 costs $4 and $20, Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 and $10, and Fable 5.1 costs $10 and $50, per Anthropic.
The headline gap shrinks in practice. Grok 4.7's rates double above 200,000 input tokens, and the model uses many reasoning tokens, OrcaRouter found. Its estimate puts a 250,000-token request at about $1.10 on Grok 4.7 and $1.16 on Opus 5.5.
What reviewers and users say about each
Grok
Reviewers credit Grok's energy and practicality. In the Tom's Guide test, Caswell wrote that "Grok, on the other hand, thrived in moments that required energy, creativity and quick, actionable thinking."
MyClaw's early Grok 4.7 review was more cautious. It recommends a trial for coding and agent work, adding: "Vendor benchmarks are a reason to test, not a reason to stop testing."
User complaints focus on limits and moderation. In May, paid users reported sudden caps on voice, image and video use, PiunikaWeb reported, before Elon Musk said limits would rise. Consumer complaints obtained by Gizmodo from the FTC cite throttling, hard cancellations and the phrase "bait and switch". Grok has also faced controversy over offensive outputs and non-consensual images, the same report notes.
Claude
Reviewers credit Claude's structure. In the same Tom's Guide round, Caswell concluded that "Claude consistently excelled at clarity, structure and making complex information feel manageable."
On Capterra, Claude holds a 4.4 rating from 63 reviews. One developer wrote that Claude helps with "debugging our code issue like real peer." Complaints mirror Grok's on limits. Another long-time user called it "disingenuous to long time customers to slowly shrink the service while also trying to increase prices."

What happens next
Anthropic said Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 would follow Opus 5.5, and both now appear on its pricing page. SpaceXSI is still moving existing SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers to the new bundle. OpenAI is also cutting off Cursor's access to its models, with a November deadline, Trending Topics reports. Expect prices and limits on both sides to keep moving.
