Google and SpaceXSI both shipped new flagship models in the past six weeks, and the gap between their assistants has widened. In this Grok vs Gemini AI comparison 2026, Gemini leads on independent intelligence scores, long documents, Google app integration and low entry prices. Grok leads on live X data, cheaper API output tokens and a bundle that adds Cursor and X Premium perks.

The choice matters because both pricing ladders changed in October. Google put its new Gemini 4 Argon model into the $19.99 Google AI Pro plan on October 13. SpaceXSI moved Grok into The X Subscription, which starts at $8 a month.

The AI Future did not run its own hands-on test for this piece. This comparison draws on official pricing and model pages, independent benchmarks, published side-by-side prompt tests and user reports, as of late October 2026. Where someone else ran a test, they are named. For Grok against Anthropic's assistant, see our Grok vs Claude AI comparison.

Quick verdict: who wins for which use case

  • Hard reasoning and long documents: Gemini. Gemini 4 Argon scores 50 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, against 35 for Grok 4.7, on the current leaderboard.
  • Breaking news and social trends: Grok. It "searches the web and 𝕏 live," according to SpaceXSI.
  • Gmail, Docs and Drive users: Gemini. Paid plans put Gemini inside Google's apps and add up to 5 TB of storage on Pro, per Google.
  • Cheapest paid plan: Gemini. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, against $8 for Grok Plus.
  • Coders who want one bill: Grok. Every paid X Subscription tier includes Grok Build and Cursor, its pricing page shows.

Our take: Gemini is the stronger all-round assistant for most people in late 2026, especially inside Google's ecosystem. Grok is the better fit if you live on X, want media tools and Cursor in one plan, or need low-cost output tokens.

Features compared

Models

SpaceXSI released Grok 4.7 on September 21, its news page shows. The company calls it "our flagship model for code and everything else." Its model docs list a 500,000-token context window and a May 2026 knowledge cutoff.

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, first for vetted cyber defenders, according to its launch post. On October 13 it became "globally available" in the API and in the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, Google said. Argon can generate up to 1 million output tokens, up from 64,000.

Google has already named a successor. Gemini 4 Carbon, announced October 28, ranks first on the Artificial Analysis index at 59, per Google. It is limited to "a subset of cyber defenders" for now, with no consumer date.

Real-time information

Live data is Grok's clearest edge. The product page promises "real-time 𝕏 integration for breaking news and trends" with live citations. Gemini grounds answers in Google Search, but has no native access to X posts.

In a February test, the tech blog Tremendous asked both tools to assess the risk of a US war with Iran. Grok 4.20 Beta cited 288 sources in 27 seconds, the blogger reported. Gemini 3.0 Pro cited none until asked to double-check its answer.

Images, video and voice

Both assistants create images and video in chat. Grok Imagine makes images up to 2K and videos up to 15 seconds, per SpaceXSI. Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing, and video generation starts on AI Plus, per Google. Both offer live voice conversations: Grok Voice and Gemini Live.

Agents and coding

Grok Build, SpaceXSI's coding agent, has been available on every plan since August, the company says. Grok Bot is its team of always-on agents. Cursor is included from the $8 Plus tier, per the pricing page, and Grok Bot from Premium, Business Today reports.

Google answers with Tasks in Gemini, which can "work for you even when you're not at your computer," and connections to more than 40 apps such as Instacart and OpenTable, according to Google. Its Antigravity coding interface now sits inside the Gemini macOS app. AI Pro also includes 200 Google Colab compute units a month, per Google One.

Work apps

Gemini is built into Gmail, Docs and Sheets on AI Pro, with 5 TB of storage. Grok reaches Google's apps from the outside, through a Workspace add-on for Sheets, Slides and Docs, SpaceXSI says. Our explainer on Google AI Mode covers Gemini inside Search.

Quality of output: same prompts, side by side

The AI Future did not run these prompts itself. The most detailed published head-to-head comes from Tom's Guide AI editor Amanda Caswell, who ran nine prompts through Gemini 3 and Grok 4.1 in November 2025. Three of them are summarised below, with her verdicts.

Prompt (Tom's Guide)Grok's answerGemini's answerWinner
Reasoning: two ropes that each burn for 60 minutes at uneven rates. "How can you measure exactly 45 minutes?"Conversational, and explained why the uneven burn cancels outClear section headers and the maths stated explicitlyGrok
Coding: "Write a Python function that determines if a given Sudoku board ... is valid"Efficient code that handled real-world input without over-engineeringMore educational, with detailed edge-case handlingGemini
Self-awareness: "What are your limitations as an AI? Give me three specific examples"A direct, well-structured answer with three realistic examplesRepeated earlier prompts and appeared to hallucinateGrok

Source: Tom's Guide, November 30, 2025.

Gemini still won overall after a 4-4 split with one tie, taking coding, debugging, logic, nuance and the tie-breaker. Caswell called its hallucination on the self-awareness prompt a first in "hundreds of hours" of chatbot testing.

Images went Gemini's way too. In a seven-prompt image test, Tom's Guide gave Grok only the photorealism round. Gemini won five, with one tie.

Two caveats apply. Both tests predate Grok 4.7 and Gemini 4 Argon. The Tremendous research test above went to Grok, so results shift with the task and the model generation. If you want to run your own comparison, our guide to writing better AI prompts explains how to keep a test fair.

What benchmarks add

Independent scores now favour Gemini. On the current Artificial Analysis leaderboard, Gemini 4 Argon (high) scores 50 and Grok 4.7 (high) scores 35. Artificial Analysis recently moved to version 5.0 of its index, Google notes, so older figures are not directly comparable.

Google's own table shows Argon at 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1 but 57.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, behind GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5, MyClaw reports. On price, Grok 4.7 output costs $6 per million tokens, against $10 for Argon now and $20 from December.

Pricing compared

Gemini is sold as Google AI plans that bundle Google One storage. Grok now ships inside The X Subscription, launched in mid-October, which bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium features, Business Today reports.

Sources: SpaceXSI pricing, Gemini subscriptions, ProPakistani for US AI Plus and Pro prices, and LaoZhang for the $99.99 Ultra tier, checked October 2026. US prices, before tax.

Both companies meter usage rather than count messages. Grok and Cursor share one weekly pool that "refreshes weekly," SpaceXSI says. In the Gemini app, usage refreshes every five hours up to a weekly cap, LaoZhang found after checking Google's help pages. Annual billing cuts AI Pro to $199.99 a year, the same publisher notes.

One change is coming for Gemini's cheapest plan. AI Plus subscribers will lose the option to pick Pro models on November 13, according to a Google One notice reported by ProPakistani. The price fell to $4.99 from $7.99 earlier this year, TechRepublic reported.

API pricing

Grok 4.7 costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, per SpaceXSI. Gemini 4 Argon costs $2 and $10 through November 30, then $4 and $20 from December 1, per Google. Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31 and has a free tier.

The introductory rate "hides a price increase over the previous flagship," pricing tracker UsagePricing warns, advising buyers to budget on $4 and $20. Notably, Grok 4.6 is also sold through Google's own Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, SpaceXSI says.

What reviewers and users say about each

Grok

Reviewers praise Grok's creative range and research speed. In the Tom's Guide test, Caswell gave Grok the creative-writing round "for delivering a genuinely unsettling reveal that makes you reconsider everything you just read in a more profound way," she wrote. The Tremendous blogger went further: "I've never seen any other model search as widely, deeply, and quickly as Grok 4.20 Beta."

MyClaw's Grok 4.7 review is more cautious, noting that "Vendor benchmarks are a reason to test, not a reason to stop testing." User complaints centre on limits. In May, paid subscribers reported sudden caps on voice, image and video use, PiunikaWeb reported, before Elon Musk said limits would rise.

Gemini

Reviewers credit Gemini's reliability and polish. After the image test, Caswell concluded that "Gemini proved to be the more reliable image generator overall," in Tom's Guide. In the text test, she said Gemini "understood the assignment on a deeper level" on the tie-breaker prompt.

Early Argon coverage is positive but hedged. "Early benchmark results are strong, but scores cannot predict how it will handle your own work," MyClaw's review says. Google claims Argon "answers questions more directly with less hedging" and "skips clichés," in its app announcement. User friction centres on access: Argon is not on the free plan, and AI Plus is losing Pro models in November.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Gemini if...

  • You use Gmail, Docs and Drive daily: Gemini works inside them and paid plans add storage.
  • You want the stronger model for the money: Argon outscores Grok 4.7 on independent indexes and comes with the $19.99 Pro plan.
  • You work with long files: AI Pro offers a 1 million-token context window.
  • You want the cheapest upgrade: AI Plus costs $4.99 a month.

Choose Grok if...

  • You follow news and trends on X: live X search is built in.
  • You code with Cursor: the bundle includes it from $8 a month.
  • You already pay for X Premium: one subscription can replace several bills.
  • You need cheaper output tokens on the API: Grok 4.7 output costs $6 per million tokens, against $10 to $20 for Argon.

Both have free plans, so you can test each on your own tasks at no cost. For more options, see our list of Grok alternatives, the best ChatGPT alternatives or our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.

What happens next

Google's Argon API price doubles on December 1. Gemini 4 Carbon is due to reach "developers, businesses, and consumers" after its cyber-defender preview, Google says, without a date. AI Plus loses Pro model selection on November 13. SpaceXSI is still moving existing X Premium subscribers to the new bundle, Business Today reports. Expect prices and limits on both sides to keep moving.
