Meta AI vs ChatGPT: which is better in 2026?

Meta AI vs ChatGPT in late 2026: ChatGPT is the stronger work tool, while Meta's free assistant and new Muse agent win on convenience and price.

Meta AI vs ChatGPT is a much closer fight in late 2026 than it was a year ago. ChatGPT is still the better all-round assistant for work: deeper research tools, file analysis, coding and a clearer paid ladder. Meta AI, now running on Meta's Muse models, wins on convenience and price, because it's free inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and its new agent app, Muse, can act for you across other apps.

That's the short answer. The longer one depends on what you mean by "Meta AI", because Meta now runs two products.

The AI Future didn't run its own hands-on test for this comparison. What follows draws on official announcements, plan details, a published side-by-side test by Tom's Guide, independent benchmark reporting and user comments, as of late October 2026. Where someone else ran a test, they're named.

Quick verdict: who wins for which use case

  • For research, documents and work tasks, ChatGPT wins, since it has deep research, custom GPTs, Codex and a dedicated agent called ChatGPT Work on paid plans.
  • For quick help inside the apps you already use, Meta AI wins, because there's nothing to install if you're on WhatsApp or Instagram.
  • For tone, social messages and explaining things to kids, Meta's model edged ChatGPT-6 in Tom's Guide's five-prompt test.
  • For planning with hard limits (budgets, time windows), ChatGPT won both relevant rounds in that same test.
  • For an agent that shops, books and handles email for you, Meta's Muse is the more focused product, though it's only in the US and Singapore so far.

Our take: I think ChatGPT is still the safer default if you'll pay for one assistant. But if you mostly want free help in your chats, Meta's catch-up this year is real, and I wouldn't dismiss it anymore.

Features compared

Meta AI is two products now

Here's the confusing bit. "Meta AI" is the assistant built into Meta's apps. In April, Meta switched it to a new model, Muse Spark, the first from its Superintelligence Labs. Going by iPhone in Canada's launch report, Muse Spark first powered the Meta AI app and website, then rolled out to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and the glasses. It added subagents that work in parallel, photo understanding, a health feature built with physicians, visual coding for simple websites and games, and a shopping mode.

Then, on 8 September, Meta launched Muse, a separate "personal AI agent". It's a different animal. Muse runs on its own cloud computer, can open a browser, fill in forms and keep working after you close the app; it asks before sending an email or buying anything. Payments go through Link by Stripe, which generates a one-time card. Meta also says Muse doesn't share your conversations or the data in that virtual machine with its ad systems, which matters given Meta's history.

Muse is in the US and, since October, Singapore. At Connect in September, Meta listed new shopping connectors including Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora and Wayfair, plus Notion, GitHub and Box for work, on its Connect recap. It's not all smooth: Android Headlines reported that Amazon blocked Muse from its store over security concerns.

ChatGPT has the deeper toolbox

ChatGPT's strength is breadth. OpenAI moved regular chats to GPT-6 in October: paying users get GPT-6 Sol in the main Chat tab, while Free and Go accounts started getting the lighter GPT-6 Luna on 8 October, as Android Headlines explained. OpenAI also claims GPT-6 Instant shows web search answers 44% faster than GPT-5.6 Instant. There's an optional Intelligent UI too, which can add small widgets (a bill splitter, say) to an answer.

Plus also brings custom GPTs, Sites, expanded deep research, Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work, an agent built for longer multi-step jobs, according to Lindy's plan breakdown. Meta doesn't really have answers to custom GPTs or deep research yet. That gap is why I'd still point anyone doing serious research with AI towards ChatGPT.

Model strength on benchmarks

The model gap has mostly closed. Meta released Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on 12 October. AI Magazine reported that Muse Wonder Full scored 56 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, ahead of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and two points behind Anthropic's top Claude setting. Benchmarks aren't everything. Still, that's a big swing for a company whose previous model, Llama 4, had slipped down the leaderboards, as Zapier noted earlier this year.

One caveat: Muse Wonder isn't powering everything yet. Meta says it's available through its Model API and Muse Code now, and will reach Muse "rolling out first to subscribers".

Quality of output: same prompts, side by side

Tom's Guide AI editor Amanda Caswell ran Meta Muse and ChatGPT-6 through five everyday prompts and published the results in a late-September head-to-head. Meta won 3-2. Three of those prompts show the split clearly, so here they are with her verdicts.

Prompt 1: the awkward neighbour text

The prompt asked for a friendly but clear text to a neighbour whose trash cans keep blocking the driveway, without sounding passive-aggressive. ChatGPT led with the request and removed any ambiguity. Meta's note was more neighbourly. Caswell gave it to Meta, saying ChatGPT's draft "reads like an HOA notice and slightly passive-aggressive."

Prompt 2: a Saturday in New York for three kids

This one had a $200 budget for activities and food, a 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. window, limited walking and an indoor option in case of rain. Meta picked the American Museum of Natural History and even cited the MTA's 44-inch height cutoff for free child rides. ChatGPT still won, because Meta's budget maths relied on an unstated assumption of tri-state residency, while ChatGPT stuck to the money and logistics limits.

Prompt 3: explaining flight to a 10-year-old

The brief was under 200 words, no equations, one analogy. ChatGPT gave an accurate explanation (wings push air down, so the plane goes up). Meta committed to the hand-out-of-the-car-window analogy and kept the tone lively, and it won the round for matching a 10-year-old's reading level.

ChatGPT also took the 45-minute pre-guest cleaning plan, partly because it remembered the guest bathroom; Meta took a creative app-idea round. The pattern's tidy: ChatGPT for constraints, Meta for people. Five prompts is a small sample, of course, and one reviewer's judgement. I'd treat it as a useful hint, not a ranking.

Pricing compared

Both have free tiers, and both now charge about $20 for the main paid plan. Meta's pricing is messier, though, because the chatbot and the agent are sold separately and the chatbot subscription is still in test markets.

Prices checked October 2026. Meta One Plus and Premium launched in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia first, with expanded image, video and reasoning limits, as The Next Web reported; buying one also includes the Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Plus perks. The $20 and $100 Muse tiers come from Android Headlines. ChatGPT's figures are from Lindy's October breakdown.

Honestly, the $7.99 Meta tier surprised me. It undercuts nothing in most countries yet, since you probably can't buy it where you live.

Reviewer and user opinions on each

On Meta's side, Caswell's reaction was blunt: "To say I'm both shocked and impressed is a serious understatement." She added that "ChatGPT is still my go-to", which feels like a fair summary of where many people sit.

ChatGPT's case was put most plainly by Zapier's comparison, written before Muse Spark arrived: "Even if ChatGPT's paid plans are miles better than Meta AI (they are), not everyone wants to pay $8-$20/month, so the comparison between the two free plans still matters." The model gap it described has narrowed since. The feature gap, as far as I can tell, mostly hasn't.

User opinion is split. In an r/ChatGPT thread on Muse Spark's launch, one commenter wrote: "Never warmed up to Meta. It always gave me BS answers (to some of the simplest questions) along with a good dose of hallucinations that made it a waste of time." Another replied: "This time they cooked The thinking mode is quite intelligent".

Demand is clearly there. Sensor Tower data cited by Android Headlines showed Muse passing 2.5 million installs in its first 13 days, and it reached the top of the US free charts on iOS and Google Play.

Which one should you choose?

Pick ChatGPT if you work with it

If you write reports, analyse files, code or use AI as a business assistant, ChatGPT is likely the better buy at $20. Deep research, custom GPTs and Codex are hard to replace. Our ChatGPT GPT-6 review goes into the plans in more detail.

Pick Meta AI if you live in WhatsApp

For quick questions, image ideas, message drafts and photo questions, Meta AI is free and already in your chats. I suspect that's enough for a lot of people. (If you'd rather not have it there at all, here's how to remove Meta AI from WhatsApp.)

Look at Muse if you want an agent that does errands

Muse is the most interesting thing Meta's shipped in years, in my view. Booking, shopping and inbox tasks are its whole point, and its approval steps look sensible. Sales teams eyeing agents may want our list of AI sales assistants too. It's US and Singapore only, though, and handing an agent your email is a real trust decision.

FAQ

Is Meta AI better than ChatGPT?

Not overall, in my view. ChatGPT has more tools for research, files and coding. Meta's newest model, Muse Wonder Full, scored above GPT-6 Astra on the Artificial Analysis index, and Meta's model won a five-prompt Tom's Guide test 3-2. So Meta is competitive on answers, but ChatGPT remains the more complete product for work.

Is Meta AI free?

Yes. Meta AI is free in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and on meta.ai. Meta has started testing paid Meta One plans at $7.99 and $19.99 a month in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia, which raise limits on images, video and reasoning. Muse, the agent app, is also free for most tasks, with $20 and $100 tiers.

What's the difference between Meta AI and Muse?

Meta AI is the chat assistant inside Meta's apps, running on Muse Spark since April 2026. Muse is a separate agent app launched in September that can take actions for you, such as filling in forms, booking travel or buying things, from its own cloud computer. It asks your permission before sensitive steps like sending email or paying.

Does ChatGPT have a cheaper plan than Plus?

Yes. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and raises Free's limits on messages, uploads, images and voice. It may show ads, though, and it skips custom GPTs and GPT-6 Astra, which start on the $20 Plus plan.

Which is better for privacy, Meta AI or ChatGPT?

It's hard to call. Meta says Muse doesn't share your conversations or virtual machine data with its ad systems, and you can opt out of having your interactions used to train Meta's models. If privacy is your main concern, I'd read each one's settings before connecting email or payment accounts.
