Sora AI invite code in 2026: do you still need one?
You don't need a Sora AI invite code any more, because OpenAI shut Sora down in 2026. Here's how codes worked, what happened, and the scams to avoid.

If you're hunting for a Sora AI invite code in late 2026, I'll save you some time: you don't need one, and no code will get you in. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026 and shut down the Sora API on September 24, 2026. There's no waitlist, no invite screen and no official way to make new Sora videos, free or paid.
That matters because the search term is still busy, and plenty of pages still promise "working Sora codes". Some are just out of date. Others are fishing for money or logins. So this guide does three things: explains how Sora invite codes worked while the app was alive, sets out what access looks like now (spoiler: there isn't any), and flags the scams to avoid. I won't be sharing any codes here, partly because that's against OpenAI's rules and partly because they'd be useless anyway.
A quick note on method: nobody at The AI Future tested Sora for this piece. Everything below comes from OpenAI's help centre, news reports and published hands-on coverage, checked in late October 2026. For the full story of the product itself, see our Sora AI review.
Sora AI invite code at a glance
| Question | Short answer (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Do you need a Sora invite code? | No. The app and website closed on April 26, 2026. |
| Can any code unlock Sora now? | No. There's no live Sora app or API to unlock. |
| Is the Sora API still available? | No. It shut down on September 24, 2026. |
| Can I get my old videos back? | OpenAI points users to an export page; data is deleted once any final export window ends. |
| What about leftover credits? | Purchased ChatGPT/Sora credits can be used for Codex, according to OpenAI. |
| Is Sora coming back? | Possibly, in a different form. Reports in October 2026 say OpenAI is in talks with a filmmaking startup. |
| Someone is selling Sora codes. Real? | Treat it as a scam. Codes were never meant to be sold, and there's nothing left to unlock. |
What was a Sora invite code?
When OpenAI launched Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, it came with a TikTok-style iPhone app, and that app was invite-only. According to Tom's Guide, the only way in at first was to have a friend who was already on the app invite you.
The codes were short strings. 404 Media described them as six-digit hexadecimal combinations, and noted that one joker had generated all 2.1 billion possibilities on a website as a gag. Brute-forcing your way in was never a real option.
The clever (or annoying, depending on your view) part was the chain. Once you activated an account, you got a handful of codes to pass on. CNET's guide said you'd get "four new invite codes to share with your friends" after setting up your account. That's how Sora spread so fast: every new user became a mini recruiter.
It worked. TechCrunch reported that the iOS app topped 100,000 installs on day one despite being invite-only, hit No. 1 on the US App Store and reached 1 million downloads faster than ChatGPT.
How people got Sora invite codes in 2025
While the invite system was running, there were a few legitimate routes in. CNET's walkthrough listed them:
- The in-app waitlist. Download the official Sora app, log in with your ChatGPT account and tap "Notify me when access opens".
- Friends. Anyone already on Sora had spare codes to share.
- OpenAI's Discord. After linking a ChatGPT account, users could ask for spare codes in a dedicated channel. CNET's writer said it took about 15 hours to get access to the server, and stressed the server's rule: "do not sell Sora 2 invite codes."
- Priority for Pro users. CNET also noted OpenAI was prioritising paying Pro subscribers, though you didn't have to pay to get in.
Notice what's missing from that list: buying a code. That was never an official route.
When did Sora stop needing invite codes?
The invite wall came down in stages, which is why so many articles from late 2025 contradict each other.
- October 30, 2025: Tom's Guide reported that OpenAI removed the waitlist for people in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea, so you could download the app and log in straight away. OpenAI called this temporary, and CNET quoted the company saying it was for a "limited time only".
- Early November 2025: Sora arrived on Android. Reports didn't fully agree on the details. Android Central said the Play Store app was available in seven countries (the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam) and that users still needed an invite code. The Hans India reported that new users in supported regions could get in without one, thanks to the invite-free window announced on October 30.
- March 24, 2026: OpenAI announced it was closing Sora. "We're saying goodbye to Sora," the company posted on X, as Engadget reported.
- April 26, 2026: the Sora app and website closed.
- September 24, 2026: the Sora API shut down too.
So "do I still need a Sora AI invite code?" has had three different answers in a year: yes, sometimes, and now not applicable.
Can you still get into Sora in 2026?
No. This is the bit a lot of old "how to get Sora codes" guides haven't caught up with.
OpenAI's own help centre page on the discontinuation is blunt: "The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. The Sora API was discontinued on September 24, 2026." The Decoder adds that the shutdown also took down sora.chatgpt.com, the platform that handled image and video generation.
That means:
- No invite code, referral link or "Sora 2 code" can unlock anything. There's no app on the other side of the code.
- A ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription doesn't bring Sora back. Sora access isn't part of any current plan.
- Developers can't route around it through the API. The sora-2 models went offline with the API on September 24.
Why did OpenAI shut Sora down?
The short version is that the hype faded and OpenAI's priorities changed. TechCrunch, citing Appfigures data, reported that Sora's downloads fell 32% month over month in December 2025 and 45% in January 2026, with consumer spending falling too. By then the app had seen 9.6 million downloads and $1.4 million in consumer spending in total.
When the shutdown was announced, an OpenAI spokesperson told Engadget that "the Sora research team continues to focus on world simulation research to advance robotics". The Decoder framed it as part of a wider shift of computing power toward coding tools and enterprise customers. Engadget also reported, citing The Hollywood Reporter, that Disney was leaving the licensing deal it had signed with OpenAI and wouldn't make its planned $1 billion investment.
Is Sora coming back?
Maybe, but not in a way that brings back invite codes. On October 12, 2026, PYMNTS, citing The Information, reported that OpenAI is in talks with a startup building AI video tools for filmmakers. The startup was co-founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles and ex-Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa, and wants access to Sora to sell software and services.
Nothing is confirmed. Digit noted that if the deal goes ahead, Sora "may return primarily as a tool for professionals rather than a service that anyone can access." If that happens, expect access through that company's own product, not a revived Sora app with a code screen. Anyone claiming to sell early access to a "Sora relaunch" right now is making it up.
Sora invite code scams to watch out for
Scarcity breeds scams, and Sora was the scarcest app of autumn 2025. Some of those schemes are still floating around search results and social media, now aimed at people who don't know the app is gone.
Sold and "farmed" invite codes
Within days of launch, 404 Media found about 20 active eBay listings for Sora 2 invite codes and 30 completed sales. Its reporter bought one for $12 and it worked. Because each new account came with fresh codes, sellers could register, keep one code, sell the rest and repeat.
404 Media also found "dozens of people claiming to be selling or giving away codes on Reddit and X", some asking for payment through Cash App or Venmo and others asking for crypto. Those payment methods are hard to reverse if the code never turns up. And OpenAI's own Discord rules, as CNET noted, banned selling codes.
In 2026 the maths is even simpler. There's no app to activate, so any paid Sora code is money gone.
Fake Sora apps
The other big problem was lookalike apps. TechCrunch, citing Appfigures research, reported that more than a dozen Sora-branded apps went live on the App Store after the official launch, over half using "Sora 2" in their names. The impostors, including some on Google Play, had around 300,000 installs and earned more than $160,000. The largest, "Sora 2 – AI Video Generator", saw more than 50,000 installs after the real app launched. Apple pulled many of them, but TechCrunch found some still live at the time.
BGR warned that some clones charged expensive in-app purchases or subscriptions and were unlikely to give you real Sora access. It added that desktop clones "might be even more dangerous than their mobile counterparts, as they could carry hidden malicious capabilities."
How to spot a Sora scam in 2026
- Anyone selling a code. There's nothing to redeem it on. Walk away.
- "Free code generators" or giveaway sites. These tend to ask you to complete surveys, install apps or hand over an email address. Nothing on the other end works.
- Requests for your ChatGPT or OpenAI login. No legitimate code-sharing scheme ever needed your password. Giving it away puts your ChatGPT account, chat history and any saved payment details at risk.
- Apps calling themselves "Sora" or "Sora 2". OpenAI's official Sora app is discontinued. A new app using the name is not OpenAI's, whatever its icon looks like.
- Downloadable "Sora for PC" installers. Never official, and a classic way to deliver malware.
- Payment by crypto, gift card or peer-to-peer apps. If a stranger insists on these, assume you won't see your money again.
If you've already paid someone for a code, contact the payment provider or marketplace quickly; eBay and card issuers have dispute processes, while crypto transfers are usually final.
What to do if you used Sora before
If you had a Sora account, a few practical things are still worth doing:
- Export your videos. OpenAI's help centre says you can export content at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset by clicking Export, and you'll get an email when it's ready. It also says that if a final export window is offered, users will be emailed before it starts, and that all Sora data will be permanently deleted afterwards. Don't leave it.
- Use leftover credits elsewhere. OpenAI says "any purchased ChatGPT/Sora credits can still be used for Codex".
- Ask about refunds through the normal route. OpenAI points refund questions to its standard ChatGPT subscription refund article.
- Beware "account recovery" offers. Only OpenAI's own help centre and support can deal with your account. Anyone else offering to restore Sora access is another scam.
Sora alternatives you can use without an invite
If what you actually want is to make AI video, you have options that don't need a code at all. invideo's August 2026 write-up says current models such as Veo 3.1, Kling 3, Seedance 2.0 and MiniMax-H3 now "cover Sora 2's jobs". Back when Sora was live, Tom's Guide found Sora 2 beat Google's Veo 3.1 in its head-to-head, but called it "a close battle".
We keep comparisons of these up to date elsewhere, so start with our guides to the best AI video generators, free AI video generators and AI tools for realistic video. Whichever you choose, the same rule applies as with Sora: get it from the developer's official site or app store listing, not from a third party selling "access".
One more thing. Sora videos are still floating around social media, and many carried a watermark that people learned to strip out. If you're trying to work out whether a clip is real, our explainer on how to tell if a video is AI walks through what to check.
FAQ
Do I need an invite code for Sora AI in 2026?
No. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app and website on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. With nothing left to sign in to, invite codes no longer do anything, and no code, referral link or subscription will restore access.
Are Sora AI codes on Reddit, X or Discord still valid?
No. Any codes still being posted are leftovers from 2025 or fakes. Even genuine old codes can't work because the Sora app has shut down. Be especially wary of anyone asking for payment, your email or your ChatGPT login in exchange for a code.
Can I buy a Sora 2 invite code?
You shouldn't. Codes were sold on eBay in 2025, but OpenAI's Discord rules banned selling them, and today there's no app to redeem them on. Paying for a Sora 2 invite code now means paying for nothing, often through payment methods you can't reverse.
How did Sora invite codes work?
Sora 2 launched as an invite-only iPhone app in September 2025. New users needed a short code from an existing member, the waitlist or OpenAI's Discord. Once signed up, each account received four codes to share, which helped the app spread quickly.
When was the Sora invite requirement removed?
On October 30, 2025, OpenAI temporarily dropped the waitlist for users in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Other regions still relied on codes or wider rollouts. The whole question became moot when the app closed on April 26, 2026.
Is there an official Sora app I can download now?
No. OpenAI's Sora app has been discontinued. Any app on the App Store, Google Play or the web calling itself "Sora" or "Sora 2" is not OpenAI's official product, and fake Sora apps were a known problem even when the real one was live.
Will Sora come back?
Possibly. In October 2026, PYMNTS, citing The Information, reported that OpenAI is in talks with a filmmaking startup co-founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and former Sora lead Bill Peebles to license the model. Nothing is confirmed, and any return may target professionals rather than the public.
