HeyGen AI review 2026: features, pricing, pros and cons
HeyGen AI makes realistic avatar videos and digital twins, with a free plan and paid plans from $29 a month. Credits are the catch. Our late-2026 review.

Our verdict on HeyGen
HeyGen is one of the most realistic AI avatar video generators in late 2026, with strong translation and an easy studio. Marketers, trainers and creators making short videos at volume should use it; skip it if you need long avatar videos on a small budget, because credits run out fast.
Pricing Free (3 watermarked 1-min videos/mo); Creator $29/mo ($24/mo annual, 600 credits); Pro from $49/mo ($41 annual, 1,000+ credits); Business $149/mo + $20/seat; Enterprise custom
Visit HeyGenHeyGen AI is an AI avatar video generator that turns a script into a video of a talking presenter, either a stock avatar or a digital twin of you. It has a free plan, and paid plans start at $29 a month, according to Voyager’s reading of HeyGen’s pricing page on October 20, 2026. The catch is credits: the newest avatar model burns through them fast.
This review covers HeyGen as it stands in late October 2026. Nobody at The AI Future ran hands-on tests for it. The findings come from HeyGen’s own help center and blog, independent hands-on reviews, third-party rating sites and about 30 recent user reviews. Where someone else did the testing, they are named.
The short version: avatar quality is near the top of the category, and the platform keeps adding features. Pricing changed sharply in 2026, and long-time users are not all happy about it.
What is HeyGen AI?
HeyGen was founded in 2020 by Joshua Xu and Wayne Liang and is based in Los Angeles, according to Wikipedia. Its last disclosed round, in June 2024, raised $60 million led by Benchmark at a $500 million valuation, the same source says.
The product is a browser-based HeyGen AI studio. You type or paste a script, pick an avatar and a voice, and HeyGen renders a video of that avatar speaking it. You can also clone yourself, clone your voice and translate existing videos with lip sync. HeyGen says it supports 177+ languages and dialects.
Typical uses are training videos, product demos, sales outreach, social clips and localised marketing. Since May 2026 there is also a full Android app on Google Play, so you can record, generate and share from a phone.
Key features of the HeyGen AI video generator
Avatar V digital twins
Avatar V is HeyGen’s newest avatar model. The HeyGen help center says you start by recording a 15-second video of yourself, and the model builds a digital identity from it. ThePlanetTools reports that Avatar V launched on April 8, 2026.
There are limits. Avatar V works only with video-based looks; photo-based looks still use Avatar IV. Inside Video Agent, Avatar V supports videos up to 3 minutes long, the help center says. In May HeyGen added Custom Motion, which lets you direct face, hands, posture, gaze and energy in plain English. The company’s pitch: “Write the performance in plain English.”
Stock avatars, photo avatars and Avatar IV
If you do not want to clone yourself, HeyGen offers a library of pre-made avatars and voices, per Wikipedia. Avatar IV animates a single photo. Avatar III, the older and cheaper engine, is still available and costs far fewer credits, according to Voyager.
Video Agent
Video Agent builds a full video from a prompt or notes, including layout, B-roll and overlays. Users like it when it works. One Trustpilot reviewer called the agent “absolutely incredible” in a September 2026 review. Others on G2 say it ignores instructions, and fixing its errors costs credits.
HeyGen AI voice and translation
HeyGen AI voice tools include text-to-speech, voice cloning and video translation with lip sync. Translation comes in “Speed” and “Precision” modes, and audio-only dubbing is also available, according to HeyGen’s credit pricing article. Several Trustpilot reviewers in September singled out how easy voice cloning was and the quality of translations.
LiveAvatar, API and integrations
Interactive, real-time avatars now sit on a separate platform, LiveAvatar, with their own billing, Voyager reports. HeyGen says you can build a LiveAvatar from two minutes of footage.
For developers, the Avatar V API costs “five cents per second”. HeyGen also lists integrations with Superhuman, Codex, Canva and Lovable, plus HyperFrames, a tool that “turns plain HTML into video,” according to its May 2026 product update.
Consent and safety controls
To create a custom avatar, users must give verbal consent and speak a password to verify identity, Wikipedia notes. Human moderators and automated filters remove bullying, harassment and disinformation. Even so, Group-IB and media reports have documented HeyGen output being used in scam and propaganda deepfakes, the same page says. Cloning anyone other than yourself without permission is a misuse of the tool.
HeyGen AI pricing and plans
Prices below were checked in October 2026 against Voyager’s October 20 snapshot of HeyGen’s pricing page and help articles, and against HeyGen’s own credits article, last updated October 19. The official pricing page could not be fetched directly for this review. Prices are US dollars before tax.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Credits per month | Max video length | Export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | None | 1 minute | 720p, watermark |
| Creator | $29 | $24/month ($288/year) | 600 | 30 minutes | 1080p |
| Pro | $49 to $4,300 | $41 to $3,586/month | 1,000 to 100,000 | 30 minutes | 4K |
| Business | $149 + $20/seat | $119/month + seats | 1,500, shared | 60 minutes | 4K |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | No maximum | 4K |
What credits buy
Credits are where the real cost sits. HeyGen’s Avatar V help article lists Avatar V at 48 credits per minute, Avatar IV video looks at 31 and Avatar IV photo looks at 16. Avatar III costs 4 credits per minute, per Voyager.
| Engine | Credits per minute | Creator (600) | Pro (1,000) | Business (1,500) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar III | 4 | 150 min | 250 min | 375 min |
| Avatar IV (video look) | 31 | 19 min | 32 min | 48 min |
| Avatar V | 48 | Up to 12 min (usage limited) | 20 min | 31 min |
So a $29 Creator plan buys roughly 12 minutes of Avatar V video a month. Creator users cannot top up; they must upgrade. Business users can buy 100 credits for $5. Voyager also flags one user who was charged about 70 credits per minute for Avatar V in September, not 48; HeyGen says rates can vary by region and account age. Check the estimate before you render.
What the free plan really includes
The free plan needs no credit card. It allows up to three watermarked videos a month, each up to one minute, at 720p, Voyager reports. You get one custom video avatar and access to Avatar IV and Video Agent, but no credits. HeyGen’s help center says the count is one to three videos depending on region. That is enough to judge quality, not to run a channel.
2026 pricing changes
Pricing moved several times this year, according to Voyager. In January the $39-per-seat Team plan was replaced by Business. In February free monthly API credits ended. On May 15 the Unlimited plans were withdrawn for new customers and replaced with credit-based plans. Legacy subscribers can keep theirs while active.
Older reviews quote different numbers, such as 200 Premium Credits on Creator and a $99 Pro plan. Those figures predate the change. If a guide quotes them, it is out of date.
API usage is billed separately, in dollars, on pay-as-you-go. HeyGen’s API pricing table lists Avatar V at $7.20 per minute, Avatar IV digital twins at $4.83, Avatar III digital twins at $0.60, Video Agent at $5.82 and text-to-speech at $0.12. Pay-as-you-go credits expire after 12 months.
Performance and independent testing
The most detailed hands-on test found was by Anthony Martinez of ThePlanetTools. He generated 22 videos with Avatar V over three days from a 15-second iPhone clip. He saw no identity drift in clips up to 4 minutes and rendered a 45-second clip in five languages in under 12 minutes. He found French lip sync slightly behind Synthesia, and said poor lighting in the seed clip shows up in the output.
His verdict: “Avatar V is the first AI avatar model that we’d actually use as our face on a brand channel.” The article also cites HeyGen benchmark scores, such as a 0.840 face-similarity score versus 0.714 for Google’s Veo 3.1. Those are HeyGen’s internal numbers and have not been independently verified.
Not every reviewer is as positive. Nathan Cole at RoboRhythms rates Avatar IV and V among the most realistic in the category but writes: “Long-video coherence drops after 60 seconds.” He also reports repeated gestures and occasional rendering glitches.
User reviews echo both sides. On G2, reviewers from July to October 2026 praise realistic avatars, lip sync and fast rendering. The common complaints are limited control over gestures and expressions, and paying credits to regenerate small edits. One September reviewer on Trustpilot put it bluntly: “Users should not have to keep paying to fix errors created during previous generations.”
The pricing shift is the loudest complaint among long-time customers. YouTuber Andrew Hough titled his September 28 video review “HeyGen Pricing 2026 & Review: Misleading, Deceptive & Dishonest (My Experience)”. In its description he writes, “I've been a paying HeyGen customer for years,” and notes he was on the unlimited plan in 2025. A legacy Creator subscriber on Trustpilot also complained of being charged credits for Avatar III video.
Our take: the quality case for HeyGen is strong and well documented. The value case depends on which avatar engine you use and how many retakes your workflow needs.
Who HeyGen AI is for
Marketers and sales teams who need many short, personalised or localised clips. Lip-synced translation and digital twins save filming time.
Trainers and L&D teams producing explainer and onboarding videos. Several September reviewers on Trustpilot use it for exactly this.
Solo creators who want a consistent on-screen presence without a camera every day, as long as they stay within short formats.
Who should skip it? Anyone who needs long, unbroken avatar footage on a small budget, since Avatar V minutes run out quickly. And anyone who wants cinematic, generative footage rather than a talking presenter; a general text-to-video model fits that better.
HeyGen AI alternatives worth considering
- Synthesia: the main rival for corporate training. Creatify, itself a competitor, calls it better suited to corporate training, and RoboRhythms favours it for enterprise and SOC 2 needs, while rating HeyGen higher on realism.
- Colossyan: another avatar platform aimed at learning and development workflows, per Creatify’s comparison.
- Sora and Runway: better for cinematic scenes than talking heads, RoboRhythms suggests. Read our Sora AI review for details.

Verdict: who should use HeyGen AI
HeyGen in October 2026 is one of the strongest AI avatar video makers available. Avatar V produces convincing digital twins from a 15-second clip, translation and voice cloning are well reviewed, and the free plan lets you judge the quality before paying.
The weak point is cost predictability. Credits fund every render, retakes are not free, and Avatar V gives Creator users only about 12 minutes a month. Price the minutes you actually need before choosing a plan.
Our take: use HeyGen if you make short avatar videos at volume and value realism. Skip it, or stay on Avatar III, if you need long videos on a tight budget.
What happens next: HeyGen has changed its plans several times in 2026. Recheck the pricing page before you commit to an annual plan.
FAQ
How to create AI avatar?
In HeyGen, open the avatars section and choose to create a digital twin. Record a 15-second video of yourself facing the camera in good light, then complete the consent step, which includes speaking a verification phrase. HeyGen builds an Avatar V twin from that clip, per its help center. A photo can also be animated with Avatar IV.
How to create AI voice over?
Paste your script into a HeyGen video, pick a stock voice or a cloned version of your own, and set the language. HeyGen renders the voice over with or without an avatar on screen. To narrate an existing video in another language, use video translation, which offers audio-only dubbing or full lip sync.
Is HeyGen AI free?
Yes, there is a free plan with no credit card. It allows up to three watermarked one-minute videos a month at 720p and one custom avatar, according to Voyager. Paid plans start with Creator at $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly.
How many videos can you make with HeyGen credits?
It depends on the engine. Creator’s 600 monthly credits cover about 150 minutes of Avatar III, 19 minutes of Avatar IV video looks or up to 12 minutes of Avatar V. Unused credits do not roll over, and regenerating a scene costs credits again.
Is HeyGen AI safe to use?
HeyGen requires verbal consent and an identity check before you clone a person, and it moderates content. Its output has still been misused in scam deepfakes, so only clone yourself or people who have agreed, and label avatar videos clearly.
