OpenAI vs ChatGPT (2026): what's the difference and which do you need?

OpenAI is the company; ChatGPT is its assistant. We compare the app, the API, GPT-6 models, Codex, pricing and ownership as of late October 2026.

OpenAI and ChatGPT aren't the same thing. OpenAI is the company; ChatGPT is its best-known product, an AI assistant you use in a browser or app. The difference matters because OpenAI also sells its models directly to developers through a separate, pay-per-use API, with its own prices and its own rules.

This explainer compares the two as they stood in late October 2026. It covers the GPT-6 models, the API platform, Codex, the shutdown of Sora and OpenAI's corporate structure. Nobody at the site tested either product for this piece. The comparison draws on OpenAI's official pages, published independent tests and reporting, as of late October 2026.

Quick verdict: who wins for which use case

There's no winner in the usual sense, because one contains the other. The real question in any "OpenAI vs ChatGPT" search is which door into OpenAI you should use.

  • If you want to chat, write, research, make images or run agents yourself, use ChatGPT. It's free to start, and paid plans run from $8 to $500 a month.
  • If you want to build GPT-6 into your own app, website or workflow, use the OpenAI API. You pay per token, from $0.10 per million input tokens.
  • If you write software, use Codex. It's OpenAI's coding agent, and it's included in ChatGPT plans from Plus up.

My take: most people probably only need ChatGPT, and I'd skip the API unless you're building something. It's for developers and businesses that make products.

Features compared

OpenAI the company

OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit, with a mission "to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity", as the structure page puts it. It added a for-profit subsidiary in 2019. It sells models, apps and developer tools. Our OpenAI review covers the company in full.

ChatGPT the product

ChatGPT is the chat app most people mean when they say "OpenAI". It runs on the web, desktop, iOS and Android. It's also the version most people judge OpenAI by, I'd guess, which is part of why the two names get mixed up so often. Going by The AI Career Lab, regular chat has run GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise since October 7, with GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go from October 8.

The headline change is Intelligent UI. ChatGPT "can now build charts, forms, calculators, and simple games right inside the chat," as Techloy puts it. I think that's the most useful change for casual users, though I'd guess plenty of them won't notice it. Plus subscribers also get the Codex and Work agents, Sites and full deep research. Our ChatGPT GPT-6 review goes deeper.

The GPT-6 models

The models sit underneath; ChatGPT is just one way to reach them. In the model docs, OpenAI names three main choices: GPT-6 Astra, "our flagship model for complex reasoning and coding"; GPT-6.1 Sol, "to balance intelligence and cost"; and GPT-6 Luna, "for cost-sensitive, high-volume workloads". On the API pricing page, there's also a mid-priced GPT-6.1 Terra.

GPT-6.1 Sol arrived at DevDay. OpenAI says it "approaches GPT-6 Astra on several evaluations" at one-fifth of Astra's standard token prices, InfoQ reported. It's available through the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI also lists specialised models for cyber defence, life sciences, images, realtime voice and transcription.

The OpenAI API and platform

The API is how other companies use OpenAI's models inside their own products. It's a separate account with separate billing. For ChatGPT Plus, "API usage is separate and billed independently", as the OpenAI Help Center spells out.

Looking at InfoQ's DevDay write-up, the Agents API gained computer use, letting apps operate software through graphical interfaces. OpenAI also previewed a Decisions API that uses Luna for classification and routing. One tool is going away: OpenAI is winding down Agent Builder and Evals, which will no longer be available from November 30, 2026 (see the company's announcement). It recommends the Agents SDK or Workspace Agents in ChatGPT instead.

Codex

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It works in ChatGPT, in code editors and in the terminal, "all connected by your ChatGPT account," as the Codex page describes it. It's included in Plus ($20 a month), Pro (from $100) and Business. At DevDay it gained cloud environments, voice input in the CLI and automated pull request review, InfoQ reported.

Sora

Sora, OpenAI's video generator, is gone, which I'd call a sharp reversal for such a heavily promoted product. The Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24, 2026, per OpenAI's help centre. Leftover ChatGPT or Sora credits can still be spent on Codex. Our Sora AI review explains what happened.

Structure and ownership

As the company describes it, OpenAI has two main parts after a recapitalisation announced on October 28, 2025:

  • The OpenAI Foundation is the nonprofit. It controls the company and appoints all members of its board.
  • OpenAI Group PBC is the for-profit public benefit corporation. It runs ChatGPT, the API and everything else.

At closing, the Foundation held a 26% stake worth about $130 billion. Microsoft held roughly 27%. Current and former employees and investors held the remaining 47%, the company says. Later funding rounds may have changed those shares, and OpenAI hasn't published an update. So ChatGPT is OpenAI's product, and OpenAI isn't owned by Microsoft.

Technically, OpenAI trains large language models on huge amounts of text and other data, then serves them from data centres. ChatGPT sends your messages to those models and adds memory, tools and an interface. The API sends a developer's requests to the same model family, without the ChatGPT interface around it.

Quality of output: same models, different wrappers

A side-by-side prompt test between "OpenAI" and "ChatGPT" would mostly compare GPT-6 against GPT-6. No original test outputs appear here, since nobody ran hands-on tests. Still, three differences shape what you get back.

  • Tuning: Techloy notes that OpenAI says ChatGPT's versions of the models "are tuned for everyday chat", while independent benchmarks test the developer versions.
  • Which model you get: Free ChatGPT users get Luna. In the API you choose any model, including Astra, and pay for it.
  • Context size: ChatGPT plans cap how much you can paste in. On Business, the reasoning context window is 256K tokens, per OpenAI's pricing page.

Common tasks map onto each route fairly cleanly:

TaskBetter routeWhy
Summarise a report and draft an emailChatGPTNo setup; Free or Go plans cover it
Classify 100,000 support ticketsOpenAI APILuna at $0.10 per 1M input tokens, with Batch discounts

Pricing compared

ChatGPT is sold as a subscription. Prices below come from The AI Career Lab's guide, which quotes OpenAI's live pricing page, and from OpenAI's business pricing page (checked October 2026).

ChatGPT planPriceChat model
Free$0GPT-6 Luna
Go$8/monthGPT-6 Luna, about 10x Free's limits; may show ads
Plus$20/monthGPT-6 Sol, plus Codex, Work and Sites
Pro$100, $200 or $500/monthGPT-6 Sol plus GPT-6 Astra in chat
Business$25/seat/month ($20 annual); Premium $125 ($100 annual)Admin controls, no training on business data by default
EnterpriseCustomSCIM, data residency, priority support

The API is billed per million tokens. These are standard rates from OpenAI's API pricing page (checked October 2026):

API modelInputOutputCached input
GPT-6 Astra$10.00$50.00$1.00
GPT-6.1 Sol$2.00$10.00$0.10
GPT-6.1 Terra$1.00$5.00$0.05
GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.50$0.01

The same page lists half-price tiers and double-price tiers for each model; priority processing was renamed Fast mode on July 30, 2026. Honestly, the Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 look steep unless you live in Codex all day, and I'd guess most people never need them. A ChatGPT subscription doesn't include API credit, and API spending doesn't open up ChatGPT plans. To compare these prices with rivals, see our guide to AI chatbot pricing.

Reviewer and user reactions

On OpenAI's models and API, DataCamp's review of GPT-6 Sol and Luna concluded that "The headline gain is cost per task on agent and coding work, not raw capability" (DataCamp). It cited Artificial Analysis, which put GPT-6 Sol at 48 on its Intelligence Index, against 47 for GPT-5.6 Sol, with cost per task falling from $1.99 to $1.06.

Developer reaction to DevDay was split. Developers highlighted computer use, cloud-based Codex and lower-cost models, "while others questioned whether the releases represented significant advances," InfoQ reported.

On ChatGPT itself, Techloy focused on the free tier. "OpenAI's own tests put it about two points behind the paid version. Independent testing puts the gap at 10," it wrote of GPT-6 Luna (Techloy). Luna is faster, though: 127 tokens per second against 85 for Sol, per Artificial Analysis. That 10-point gap probably matters most to free users.

User feedback on ChatGPT is mixed. Our OpenAI review found a 4.8-star rating on Google Play alongside a much lower Trustpilot score, with complaints about wrong answers, usage limits and AI-only support.

Choosing between them

  • Students and casual users: start with free ChatGPT. Move to Go only if you hit upload or image limits.
  • Professionals: ChatGPT Plus at $20 is probably the usual pick. It adds GPT-6 Sol, Codex and the Work agent.
  • Developers building apps: open an OpenAI API account. Start with GPT-6.1 Sol or Luna, and keep Astra for hard tasks.
  • Teams: ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, with the API on top if you build internal tools.

Coming changes

Several changes land soon. Agent Builder and Evals leave the platform on November 30. GPT-5.6 Sol's promotional API pricing runs at least through November 21, per OpenAI's pricing page. And starting in December, ChatGPT Business plan usage will have "a shared limit across all of ChatGPT and Codex," the company says. FAQ

Is OpenAI ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI's the company, and ChatGPT's one of its products. OpenAI also makes the GPT-6 models, the Codex coding agent and a developer API. OpenAI's the maker and ChatGPT's the app.

Is ChatGPT OpenAI?

ChatGPT is made and run by OpenAI, but it isn't the whole company. It's OpenAI's consumer and business assistant, running on GPT-6 Luna for free users and GPT-6 Sol for Plus and above. Developers who want the same models in their own software use the separate OpenAI API, which has its own billing.

Is OpenAI Chat GPT?

Not exactly. "Chat GPT" is usually a spelling of ChatGPT, the chatbot OpenAI launched in 2022. OpenAI is the company behind it. The "GPT" part refers to OpenAI's generative pre-trained transformer models, now the GPT-6 family: Astra, Sol, Terra and Luna. Each powers ChatGPT, the API or both.

Is Chat GPT OpenAI?

Chat GPT belongs to OpenAI, specifically OpenAI Group PBC, which is controlled by the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation. Microsoft owned roughly 27% of the group after its 2025 recapitalisation, but it doesn't own ChatGPT. So yes, ChatGPT is an OpenAI product. Later funding rounds may have shifted that 27% since, which I'd keep in mind.

How does OpenAI work?

OpenAI trains large AI models on vast amounts of data, then runs them in data centres. It earns money two ways: ChatGPT subscriptions for people and teams, and pay-per-token API access for developers. A nonprofit foundation controls the for-profit company, which must balance its mission with commercial goals as a public benefit corporation.
