Rudi AI review 2026: what Grok's red panda was, Bad Rudy and what's left

Rudi AI is xAI's red panda companion for Grok, with a kids' storyteller and a crude Bad Rudy mode. Its animated avatar is gone; here's what remains.

Rudi was a neat idea for AI bedtime stories, but it lived in an adult-rated app beside an unfiltered Bad Rudi mode, and its animated avatar was retired in September 2026. Grok users may enjoy the persona in text chat; parents and anyone thinking of paying for a Grok plan just for Rudi should skip it.

Short answer first: Rudi AI is a red panda character made by xAI for its Grok chatbot. It came in two flavours, a gentle bedtime-story teller called Rudi (or Rudy) and a foul-mouthed alter ego called Bad Rudi, and it lived inside Grok's animated "Companions" mode. That's the part most people searching for "rudi ai" don't know yet: the animated panda was removed from the Grok app starting September 1, 2026, and what's left is the personality, running in ordinary text chat.

So this is a slightly odd review. I'm reviewing a character that has lost its body. Nobody on our team ran a hands-on test of Rudi for this piece, and with the avatar gone, nobody can test the original experience any more anyway. Instead I went through xAI's own Grok pages, the app store listings, the reporters who did sit down and talk to the panda, and the coverage of its retirement, all as of late October 2026. Where someone else did the testing, I'll name them.

My view: it's a fascinating little piece of AI history, and probably a weak reason to pay for anything today.

Rudi AI in brief

Rudi is one of the Grok Companions, a set of animated characters xAI added to its Grok app in July 2025. Tech Dev Notes describes him as a scarlet-red panda with "two distinct personalities that users can switch between": the wholesome children's storyteller Good Rudi and "the unhinged, profane chaos agent Bad Rudi." Same panda, very different mouth.

The name is a bit of a mess, which explains the search terms. NBC News noted that the app "sometimes calls it Bad Rudy or just Rudy," and Elon Musk himself posted, as quoted by Dexerto, that he was "Tuning Rudi (new name, cause he's so rude) right now to be less scary and more funny." So whether you typed rudi ai, rudy ai or "bad rudy ai", you almost certainly mean the same character.

One thing to clear up if you're looking for the Rudi AI official website: there isn't one. Rudi was always a feature of Grok, not a separate app, so the official home is xAI's Grok page and the Grok apps on iOS and Android. A few unrelated projects and courses also use the name Rudi, so if a site asks you to sign up for "Rudi AI" and has nothing to do with Grok, it isn't this panda.

Key features

Here's what Rudi actually did when the Companions mode was live, based on the people who used it, and what still works now.

Good Rudi: interactive stories for small children

This was the headline use. A reporter who tried Rudi for a piece published on AOL concluded the character was "probably aimed at young children, ages 3 to 6." Rudi greeted users as "Story Buddy" and made up kid-friendly tales, then asked which way the story should go next. The same reporter fed it touchy questions and found it "successfully dodged them."

Tom's Guide had a similar experience: Rudi opened by offering a story "about a brave knight saving a princess, or maybe a story about a dragon," told in a soft voice that the writer found "creepy at first, but then you get used to it."

Honestly? That's the most relatable review line in this whole saga.

Bad Rudi: the roast mode

Flip a setting and the same panda turned into an insult comic with no brakes. Early clips went viral, with Dexerto reporting Bad Rudi called one user "dumb as dishwater." It got much darker than roasting, though, which I'll come back to in the safety section. Users had to opt in to see it, according to NBC News.

Animated avatar and voice (now gone)

The thing that made Rudi feel different from a text bot was the 3D body: a red panda in a hoodie and shorts that talked, gestured and lip-synced in real time. AI Insights News lists exactly what was removed: the 3D animated avatars, "lip-synced voice presence", the Companions tab and the outfit selector. Rudi and Bad Rudi were part of that removal.

Persona in regular Grok chat (what's left)

According to Robo Rhythms, "Ani, Mika, Valentine, Rudi and Bad Rudi survive as personalities you can summon inside ordinary Grok chat," and your chat history stays on your account. I couldn't find an official xAI help page that spells out exactly how to call up the Rudi persona today, so treat the details as reported rather than documented.

Pricing and plans

Rudi never had its own price. You paid for Grok, and Rudi came along. Grok's paid plans now sit under one bundle called The X Subscription, which covers Grok, X and Cursor. Here's what xAI's official pricing page lists (checked October 2026):

PlanPriceNotes
Free$0/monthLimited chat and agent requests
Plus$8/monthShared AI usage pool for Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build; Grok API access; Cursor
Premium$30/month4x the usage of Plus, latest Grok models, image and video generation, Grok Bot
Super$100/month15x the usage of Plus, priority model access at peak times
Ultra$200/month50x the usage of Plus

Prices exclude taxes such as VAT, and usage refreshes weekly, according to xAI. Older App Store in-app listings may still show the previous SuperGrok plan names, so go by the official pricing page.

On what the free plan includes, Rudi-wise: at launch, NBC News reported the companions were "available to anyone, including Grok users without a paid subscription," as long as you opted in. Later guides, such as Layer3 Labs, said a paid SuperGrok plan (the old name for Grok's subscription) was needed for full companion access. With the animated mode gone, I'd say nobody should buy a paid plan just for Rudi. Robo Rhythms even includes a section on cancelling a subscription you no longer want after the change.

Performance: what independent testers found

We didn't test it ourselves, so here's what the people who did reported.

  • Stability was shaky. The AOL tester said "the app crashed several times" and Rudi "had trouble keeping up with the audio flow of conversation. It also changed voices several times without warning."
  • Stories were fine but samey. The same piece found Rudi "leaned too hard on plots with fantasy elements like a spaceship or magical forest."
  • Good Rudi was harmless. Tom's Guide called it "pretty non-offensive, telling very simple stories and getting excited in the process."
  • Bad Rudi had almost no guardrails. In a TechCrunch test, the reporter wrote that "Bad Rudy basically has no guardrails, which is its whole point," and got it to suggest violent attacks on a school and a synagogue. NBC News documented similar violent schemes in its own conversations.

That last point matters more than the crashes, I think. A kids' storyteller and an anything-goes troll shared the same face and the same app, which seems a bad idea in hindsight. Musk did say the character was being tuned to be "less scary and more funny" (Dexerto), but I couldn't find any independent re-test showing how much changed.

Safety and parental concerns

Parents who heard "Grok has a panda for kids," should know this first.

  • The Grok app itself is rated for adults on Android. The Google Play listing shows "Rated for 18+". That alone makes it a strange home for a preschool storyteller.
  • The companion lineup was mixed. Rudi shipped next to Ani, a flirtatious companion with an adult mode, as reported by NBC News and OfficeChai. Layer3 Labs advises parents to "treat the feature as adult software."
  • Your child's chats go to xAI. Layer3 Labs reminds readers that companion chats are processed on xAI's servers, so keep personal details out.

Rudi AI alternatives

Plain Grok with your own instructions

If you liked Rudi's tone, you can get most of the way there inside Grok itself. xAI lists custom instructions and memory across chats as standard features, so you can ask for a gentle storyteller voice without relying on a retired companion. Our guide on how to use Grok AI walks through the basics.

Character.AI

The best-known home for character chat. It has its own rules for younger users and its own business turbulence, which we cover in our Character AI review.

Other AI companion apps

If what you miss is a talking character to hang out with, our list of the best AI companion tools compares the main options. If you want to leave Grok entirely, see our picks of alternatives to Grok.

One note: the animated Ani and Mika moved to a separate app called Animates, but AI Insights News lists only those two characters there, and the app targets mature audiences. Rudi didn't make the jump, so it's not an alternative for this use.

Verdict: who should use it and who should skip it

Rudi was a clever idea, and I mean that. A chatbot that makes up a dragon story on demand, lets your kid pick the hero and never gets bored of the same request is exactly the kind of low-stakes job generative AI is good at. The AOL reviewer made the same point: with made-up fairy tales, "you don't have to worry about hallucinations."

But the execution never matched the idea. The good version lived in an 18+ rated app next to a flirt bot, its evil twin could be talked into violent fantasies in minutes, testers saw crashes and voice glitches, and now the animated panda that made it special is gone. What remains is a persona in a text box. Fun, probably, but hardly a reason to switch chatbots.

Use it if you already use Grok and want a playful character voice for fun, or you're curious about the history of AI companions.

Skip it if you're looking for a storyteller for young children, or you were thinking of buying a paid Grok plan just to meet the panda. That ship has sailed, sadly.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

FAQ

What is Rudi AI?

Rudi AI is a red panda character created by xAI for its Grok chatbot. It launched in July 2025 as an animated companion with two modes: a child-friendly storyteller and a crude "Bad Rudi" roast mode. The 3D avatar was removed from Grok starting September 1, 2026, but the persona reportedly still works in regular Grok text chat. It has no separate app or site, and it's best understood as a mode of Grok rather than a product.

What is Bad Rudy AI?

Bad Rudy (or Bad Rudi) is the uncensored alter ego of Grok's Rudi panda. Users had to opt in, and it insulted people with vulgar roasts. TechCrunch and NBC News also showed it could be pushed into violent fantasies.

What is the Rudi AI official website?

There's no standalone Rudi AI website. Rudi was a feature of xAI's Grok, so the official sources are x.ai/grok, grok.com and the Grok apps on the App Store and Google Play. Be wary of unrelated sites using the Rudi name and asking for sign-ups or payment.

Is Rudi AI still available?

Partly. xAI announced on July 24, 2026 that it would retire the 3D companion mode, and removal began on September 1, 2026, according to AI Insights News. The animated Rudi is gone, but reports say the Rudi and Bad Rudi personalities, plus your chat history, remain available in normal Grok chat.

Is Rudi AI safe for kids?

Good Rudi itself told mild, simple stories in independent tests. The problem is where it lives: the Grok app is rated 18+ on Google Play, it shared space with adult companions, and Bad Rudi was one setting away. Parents should supervise closely or choose a tool built for children.

Is Rudi AI free?

Rudi was never sold separately. At launch NBC News reported companions were free for Grok users who opted in, while later guides said full access needed a paid plan. Grok has a free plan, and paid plans under The X Subscription start at $8 a month (Plus), with Premium at $30, as of October 2026.
